I have oftened wondered why people do this. Is it merely an affectation? Do people believe that we are incapable of directing our gaze several centimeters to the left in order to confirm who wrote the post? Are they simply morons?

It's probably a habit from e-mails or Usenet.

In fact, it's unnecessary to sign an e-mail (although it get's a bit dodgy when things are forwarded) but I wouldn't be comfortable without doing so.

We have a "signature" area - so why would you want to sign and then re-sign?

I agree, it's stupid. Although I do often sign my e-mails - but that's because I don't have an auto-signature at the bottom of them. If I did, I wouldn't sign them.
