Hooray - its the first of the new month. Time to set my new month goals!
Now, i have taken it upon myself to give me 10 goals each month which i intend to complete. This is because i have a terrible lack of self discipline.
Now, last month, my goals were as follows.
1. Crack one off with the left hand
Im right handed, and it seemed like a challenge. obviously not though, as i managed it after 2 days
2. Complete Spider solitaire on hard
although i did it once after 2 weeks, i continued playing spider solitaire rather obsessively, and won again just last week. Last time i checked to go with my two wins, i have 87 losses.
3. Tidy Room
Done. After 9 months of tripping over ****, having unboxed unlabelled CDs hanging about everywhere and just generally being a lazy ****, i got my room tidied last night with 30 minutes to spare.
4. Clean Window
The window above me and my PC was covered in paint, bird ****, and general other crap. Not anymore, as i can happily stare at the stars
5. Fix Hair
I havent cut it since september. Ive now started using a new conditioner which gives it a bit of hold, and keeps it out my eyes at least. Hooray!
6. Driving lessons
Booked my first lesson on friday afternoon, thats coming up a week on thursday,
7. Gig tickets
Despite all my moaning, i will go and see T in the park this year, even if i dont bother going to see any of the bands.
8. Spraypaint
Had 3 cans of spraypaint sitting about my room. Although its the worst paintjob ever, i painted part of my room
9. Write next chapter of book
Did little bits over the month, and finished it off with 3 minutes or so to spare last night. I personally think its good, but wont be posting it, etc. (Sorry fans!)
10. Throw party
Done about 3 weeks back. Barbeque then drinking.
Now, as you can see, this is the type of **** i have had to do. I feel it worked well, as i got a lot of **** done that i never would have bothered doing otherwise. So this month ill be doing it again. Heres what i have so far
1. Take Jo to Persepolis
Persepolis is my favourite kebabary. Its well out the way, and i have a **** one next to me, so my friend Jo has bugged me for 2 months to take her for a kebab. Any excuse for me to be honest.
2. Assemble Dad's PC
For the last 9 months, or technically the last 2 years, i have been building a PC. Although i feel i have all the parts in working order, it just doesnt work. Ill probably be taking a number of tripts to P&IT to get it together, and i think ill be needing to buy some extra parts. Its his birthday on the 13th of May, so this is a definite deadline.
3. Send off UCAS form choices.
If i dont tell UCAS which 2 of my choices i want, i wont get to go to Uni next year, simple as that.
4. Use the disabled lift in my school
This is something ive wanted to do for over 5 and a half years. Im coming to the end of my school days and yet ive never had a chance to do it. I mean it, i'll die unfulfilled if i never get to use that lift. Stealing the key will be a total ****.
5. Start learning Piano
I have do-it-yourself Piano lessons from books, and ill probably pay for some actual lessons too. This is something ive always wanted to do, but never bothered. I listen to a ****load of Billy Joel, and have a piano collecting dust in my house. Seems like a bit of a waste to me.
6. Write third chapter of book.
Maybe fourth if i can get motivated, too. I dont have a deadline as such for completion, as im not showing anyone it at least until its done and re-read twice. Fun though
7. Download 200+ new songs
This includes all the bands i have on my "get into more" list, bands and artists whom i have only scratched the surface of their talent, aka Pulp, OCS, the Phonics, Idlewild, james, pink floyd, offspring, lighthouse family, nin, u2 as well as of course Oasis blur, the manics, and the lightning seeds. I have been lazy about getting new music, and suddenly most of my tracks are getting a bit stale.
8. Buy own razor, and shave more often
Owning up time. I have a terrible teenager tash. Not deliberate, just like my hair though, i really cant be assed. Appearance has never been an issue for me. Until now ive been shaving only very occasionally, using my dads. I cant be ****ed cleaning it every time, and its about time i owned my own, electric or otherwise.
9. Perfect Room
My room may be clean and tidy, but there is always more i could do. I could strip some of the old comic strip bits off my wall, check and ditch if neccessary some of the forementioned unlabelled CD's, remove some of the old posters i have, put up new ones that have just been sitting around forever. Gut cupboards, clean the eves etc.
Ok, nows where i need your help. What should be my 10th objective? Achieve a certain GD postcount? Something stupid in real life? Post porn on GD and not get banned?
Or if you want, post your own 10 month goals
Input, please

Giving yourself a set of goals that are toilsome to such an extent as yours and then completing them, is quite a performance.

6. walk more (my school's not THAT far away... )
7. keep my room tidy (i tidied it the other day)
8. do some more work on my family tree
9. find out more info on working in England for a few years after i graduate

deffeh: no :P
and i meant to add i know exactly how you feel about people reading your work when it's not done. i won't let anyone read my stories.. (except my sister to proofread) and i'm really vague when people ask what they're about.
MrL: yes but i need some alternatives in case it doesn't work out. such as what happens if we get a divorce?? will i get shipped off back to canada?

i dont feel id benefit anything from anyone reading my stories. Id feel personally a bit pretentious, because either deliberately or subliminally you put a bit of yourself or your experiences into every character you create. So if i made my main character an Adonis, or a smooth kinda funny guy, id be embarrassed at people getting a misconception that thats what i actually think of myself. If i made him thoughtful, or negative, people would accuse me either to my face, or in their mind of having a high opinion of myself.
Im sure its the same for you. If you write about a characters physical attributes, its tough to find the right combination of feeling comfortable with who they are (because they are in a sense, you - each character is a train of your thought, each decision they make is one youd consider etc), but at the same time not describe them as overtly promiscuous etc.

exactly!
what i worry about is that if i create a character with some sort of issue.. the reader will think that i have that issue, (issue being mental problem, past negative experiences, etc) when i don't have it.. it's just part of the character.

I personally feel i put more world observations into my characters that i dont get a chance to express in real life.
Little things about the way people react, overreact, in everyday situations. Little observations about the underlying motives people have in all the reactions, the way they try and mask things.
Thats the way i want to write
the plot is pretty much secondary to the characterisation for me

At first I thought you might be talking about not having pride in your work, but if you're worried that people will think you're arrogant, you underestimate your readers. Will you be showing it to friends, family, etc?
Cyp, sounds like a good challenge. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/MonsterGroup.html scares me.
