I use both. Different circumstances, different uses.

Paperclips dont have to be permanent, and can be bent into a small bow shape causing much deadlyness when a rubber band and a lot of pencils is added to the mix.
Staples hold things together, thats about it.

Paperclip - used to hold paper together that will be seperated at a later time
Staple - used to permanently hold paper together that belongs together and contain similar material!
Genious

Why not melt the paper together with wax? Saves anyone getting hurt by sharp metal.

Staples are the Demon From the Stinky Depths of HELL, the moment you staple some papers together you realize you dropped a page and then you have to remove the staples tear your paper, restaple, but the stapler is f*cked and the staples come out sideways and bend wrong so you tear the paper some more finally the f*cking thing gets on your nerves and then you find a stapler that would work if it only had staples. You see some staples, a set of 2, stuck in the desk drawer and you try to fit in but it wont fit because its too small. When you finally get the paper stapled it looks like a mangled, perforated mess with two sh*t staples contorted to keep the pages from falling apart.
Paper clips suck because you buy a box of 100 but only ever use 100. When you get bored you'll chain them together but you'll regret having done that when you need a staple and you're i n a hurry.
I say ****it. Why can't we just send our word documents as emails? Damn those professors and their luddite tendencies.

I think you will find that the people who made the stapler were rather clever themselves. If you look at the metal plate where the staples are forced together you will notice there are two sets of indents. If the stapler is set with the indents further apart when you staple something the staple will have been forced into a straightish pin shape. This is easy to remove and meant to be used to hold paper together that will be seperated at a later time.
