Never thought I'd have to ask GD for help
I was wondering if anyone in here can recommend me good introductionary books on relativity, quantum physics and/or astrophysics/cosmology.
Preferably you should have actually read the book(s) yourself.

Re: Never thought I'd have to ask GD for help
On a holiday trip to Belgium this new year I found a book called
"Introduction to Quantum Mechanics" by David J. Griffiths. I took it.
But it's got so much maths in it that I won't be able to understand a single page of it for at least the next year...
Depends on how serious you want to take this. the Hawking book is nice, but you know, "popular science". No formulas in it.
You might wanna look at some book for school physics?
I've got so many maths and physics books in my room atm, I lost the overview a bit.

Re: Never thought I'd have to ask GD for help
I am currently doing both Higher level physics and maths in my first year of the International Baccalaureate diploma, so I do have a certain amount of understanding for both physics and maths. Even if there are books I cant read right now, I'd still be interested in books I could read after reading introductions or after I get my diploma.

Roger Penrose, Brian Greene and Richard Feynman respectively.
Dynamics and Relativity would be another good choice.

It says in the thread.
Yes, I know that was almost certainly a flippant comment, but I live for the possibility that it wasn't.

Re: Never thought I'd have to ask GD for help
decent books on QM include Quantum Mechanics by Albert Messiah, Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics by John von Neumann, Quantum Mechanics by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and als already mentionen The Emperor's New Mind by Roger Penrose

Agree 110% Feynman is a joy to read/listen too. I believe a number of his lectures are available for download from various sources*
*dc++ bittorrent etc
I'd also recommend listening to Richard Feynman - A Curious Character, a mini biography of the great man full of his usual lightening wit and amusing anecdotes.

I would be pretty worried if my face turned blue and I lost all of my hair, to be honest.

Yes.
"The Road to Reality" also, but its a bit more detailed (in a mathematical sense). It's not the sort of thing you'd read on the toilet anyway.

TRTR is generally regarded as being excellent if you knew it all already.

Re: Never thought I'd have to ask GD for help
I'd personally say its an excellent companion while you're actually learning the more advanced material since he generally presents concepts in a 'different' manner from standard textbooks, but ok.
