DNS and IPv6

I'm having ALOT of trouble with my internet connection.

I am on Windows XP desktop computer, connecting to a wireless router with built-in ADSL modem.

I can connect to IRC servers, BitTorrent, Kazaa and if i have the IP address, websites, and I can recieve emails and DCCed files.

I can't connect to other websites or MSN messenger or send e-mails or send files via DCC.

I do an ipconfig /all in command prompt and get the following:
Code:

I looked on the microsoft support website and I found an article about installing the Windows Loopback Adapter and installing the Advanced Networking Pack, which I did both

I've also been told that it is something to do with IPv6

I know I've given you alot of information there, just wondering if there are any ideas out there, or people who have (and maybe cured) the problem

cheers, reply either to me here, in PM or on IRC, netgamers server, nick Arfy in #veneratio

thanks everyone!

Re: DNS and IPv6

You're not using IPv6 unless your ISP is totally insane, seeing as most networking equipment doesn't support it, so we can discount that.

What I would say is:
What in GODS NAME have you done to your networking config? 7 network adaptors?!
No wonder you're having problems, your computer is probably confused about which one is being used for what. I sure am.
How many of those are actual hardware devices and how many are virtual?
Which one is connected to the net for crying out loud?

How on EARTH have you ended up with such a mess?!

Re: DNS and IPv6

well I would guess its cos all the times I've phoned the d-link support line they get me to create a whole new connection...

And in reply to your questions, i have no idea and its really annoying

Ok, well...
  • As megla said, there is no use for IPv6 (yet). You should try to connect to your router and have a look if you can disable it.

  • Ok, so you've got a DNS problem. Did you get DNS server addresses from your provider? If so enter them. Also look for an option to choose if your DNS server is IPv6 or IPv4.

  • Try finding DNS server addresses for your ISP. Either via web search, or use the old configuration (i.e. modem plugged directly into pc) to find out the IPs. Enter them to your router config to override that automatic IPv6 rubbish.

  • Hmmm, maybe every time you tried changing the settings, a new loopback / tunneling adaptor was created? Try removing them, or at least clean up your network connections a bit.

  • Is it a wireless problem? What happens when you connect to the router via cable?

Re: DNS and IPv6

Now i've had a bit more time to study that lot (was at work earlier) I'm inclined to agree with JetLinus.
For each and every network connection you have in your Network Connections area, right click on it.
If there is an option to delete it, do so. If there is no option to delete it thats fine, because that means its a hardware device (ie. a proper connection and not a virtual one).

I have no idea what D-Link tech support thought they were doing but they've done more harm than good. They're either complete muppets, or there was a bit of a misunderstanding over what was going on, or both!

Once you've pruned the useless connections out of there, get back to us with whats left and our job will be a lot easier!

Re: DNS and IPv6

:gollum: Well, i had exactly the same issue , weird ipconfig /all etc...

The problem is with Microsoft IPV6 and the addon Advanced Networking Pack.

// just go to control panel / add remove programs /

// remove Advanced Networking Pack

// a window op up would then spash your screen (typical Redmond Co square style) and warn you that Messenger, Kazaa, E donkey and other soft that you cherish would not work anymore...

// Do not give a XXXX and keep uninstalling.

// Reboot ( (typical Redmond Co. square behavior) /.

Then you will have yor normal IP address.... and yout pC would fly again on the web...

Warmest regards

doMinique

PS : like father sean o' seanessy (sorry Ted Crilly ) i am quite surprise to see so many net cards, if you do not have so many the number of peripherals shown comes from the IPV6 wrong setup. You should get your normal config back anyway.

PPS : For good IPV6 use linux ...AUROX or suSe seem to be the stablest at the moment for the newbies.

like Father
