Wikipedia appreciation thread
Wikipedia is in my opinion easily one of the best sites on the entire internet. Its difficult to remember what I did to get quick information before I discovered it, and it stands as a fantastic momument to what the internet makes possible. There's no other site (other than messageboards) on which I can regularly spend hours just reading random links with no specific overarching purpose.

Re: Wikipedia appreciation thread
It is rather rocking.
Although I've used it regularly, I've not really looked into the underlying technical structure. How does it work exactly? If everyone can basically edit everything, what's stopping a relatively controversial topic (say, Communism) being changed from "Communism rocks!" to "Communism sucks" and back again every few minutes?

I think most of it relies on trust, and self-policing.

it possible for a vandal to delete all Wikipedia pages?
Not really. You need to be an administrator to permanently and totally delete pages. Any other users could remove the text of a page, but any other user could restore the text from the history archive. If someone did an extensive attack, they could be blocked from further editing by the admins. Moreover, there are periodic backups kept of the server itself. For more on this topic, see this discussion of "wiki wipeouts" at the original Wiki.

Re: Wikipedia appreciation thread
I'm not too worried about the notion of vandalism, more partisan stuff. Although it's far more balanced than most paper encyclopaedia's I've read. That might be just the war of attrition that the trolls engage in wearing down all the zealots.

The first link I pasted addresses your questions mang
Quote:
Partisans
There are plenty of partisans who are all too eager to leave out information that is important to presenting a balanced view. They'll be delighted to post to Wikipedia, and that's going to create huge gaps in your coverage, which will ruin the project.
Frequently the initial author omits crucial information, whether due to ignorance or malice. In many cases, but not all, this is fixed quickly by the scores of people reading Wikipedia every day. For example, Wikipedia has fairly decent, balanced articles about war, capitalism, evolution, abortion, Islam, Scientology, and prostitution. Wikipedia is actually notable as a means of coming to agree on controversy, and has been studied by some researchers for its ability to neutralize the often noxious debates on such topics. Very often it is easy to find a "troll bridge" on which many such partisans can work in relative peace and come to agree on methods, even facts.
Bear in mind that Wikipedia is a work-in-progress, a draft, an "alpha release" if you will. It does have many important gaps, which we try to make explicit. This lack of coverage isn't due to ignorance, partisans, cranks, or anything else malicious--it's due simply to the finite amount of time that a finite number of people have been working on it - see systematic bias below.
Finally, we are aware of the potential for literally hordes of partisans to arrive in waves as part of a "troll war". If you are quite concerned about this potential, you might help us work on these policies.

That Japanese one is probably pretty high up (Channel 2 or whatever it's called).
Usenet probably still has vastly more posters / viewers, but that'd be silly to include.

I'd imagine official gaming forums (Battle.net especially) would have lots of members.

This article directed me to this site, which says that these forums are the largest on the internet.
Wikipedia is great.

Re: Wikipedia appreciation thread
A big problem is that a lot of the obscure subjects that you would really desire information on have nothing written about them. Often some of the articles are horribly mono-focused and of poor quality. It's hugely variable.
