For people who can't join (or don't want to) a classic alliance, why not create 4 groups based on races:
- the Cathaar Brotherhood
- the Xan Supremacy
- the Terran Corporation
- the Zikonian Guild
They'd give a -1 eta for members defence. They'd use some basic ingame alliance features : forum, def calls, attacks. No real chain of command.

I think it's a good idea, I see there being many people planning their own attacks and have them available to everyone else that want to join in. Of course there could be a ton of attacks planned by different people. It may incourage members not to go for an alliance though. I mean if it's safety in numbers you're after then you may as well go for these default alliances, especially in the early stages of the round where the alliance member limits are low. Also Tis puts it best saying: "Support planets ahoy".

Could be worth thinking about though... nice idea

Um, I thought the whole purpose of an alliance was to have people of different races to cover your butt. If I'm a Terran, and I'm under attack from a fleet that takes a Terran easily, what good is it going to do to be in an alliance that only has other Terrans?

Just a thought.

Just a thought and a good point, i can see many pros and cons to a system such as the one being discused... i just cant be bothered to write an essay about it at 0730am lol

Terrans and the other races have ships to fight every ship class. With a same race group you'll be able to overcome an attacker not by what kind of ship you can muster but just how many. For noobs it makes it easier, for experienced players... well they already have an alliance.
