Actually, they do. No aircraft charges down a runway using power from its wheels, only to switch to jet (or whatever) engines once it is actually airborne.

As such, the engines do make it take off.

Further, i interpret the question to mean that essentially what you have is a treadmill that is just like a runway, except that the runway (is meant to) move towards the plane, rather than the plane charging down a runway.

As such, imagine this environment. You have the ground, a runway, an aircraft, and a tree in the ground, and the air. Essentially, the runway is moving towards the plane to prevent the plane moving relative to the tree, whereas in conventional takeoff the plane would move down the runway and change position relative to the tree.

As the wheels are assumed to have zero friction, the speed at which the runway is moving is irrelevent. All forward thrust is generated by the engines, which are pushing against the air. Given that there is no wind, one can assume that the air is attached to the ground. Thus, the aircraft is pushing against the ground directly, and thus move relative to the tree. One way of thinking about this is by kneeling on a skateboard: you dont actually move anywhere untill you push against the ground, then you move forward.

I cant wait for Mythbusters to actually test this in the real world, as this issue is brought up on their forums all the time.

The plane will take off.

Whilst i admit i might not have explained it clearly, the wheels are irrelevent. They could be sleds, or whatever. Thrust is generated by the engines against the air, which pushes the airframe forward, not the wheels. As the wheels have no friction, the treadmill could be moving at infinite velocity and the plane would move forward. However, the speed at which the wheels are turning relative to the landing gear strut would be different to normal, given that the runway (but not the ground or the tree) is moving towards the aircraft faster than it normally would.

The treadmill is irrelevant, much like a helicopter pad isn't all that essential when it comes to a helicopter taking off.

Or as is my understanding :/

A brilliant piece of thread bumping. Not only did it take the thread to the seventh page but, if we work it right, we can run the thread into its third year. Apparently this thread is on an endless treadmill and is unable to take off. Case closed.

Re: A Plane Problem

Dude, with all due respect, which appears to be very little, how could you possibly think that? The wheels of the plane, the only part attached to the runway, are in no way important to it's motion. They only exist to allow the plane to roll. Therefore when the plane is under motion as a result of force generated by it's engines through it's wings all the conveyor belt is doing is moving the wheels twice as fast as they would be rotating otherwise.

Similarly, if the conveyor belt was going forward then the plane would not move or take off twice as fast. In fact if the conveyor belt was matching the speed exactly then the wheels would not be moving at all.

Honest to God dude, you know I like you but I honestly and truly weep for the children.

Re: A Plane Problem

The plane would take off meaning that the wheels would leave the ground but with the insuficient velocity to maintain enough airflow over the wings to sustain flight the plane would immediately come back down. To continue would be to watch the plane lift and land until the landing gear failed and the plane crashed.

Re: A Plane Problem

Interesting thread, actually. I missed pages 2-6 though, so forgive me if any of the latter has been covered.

Why people are arguing with TomKat is a mystery... maybe you just don't like the fact he's right, who knows. I don't know him, so I offer no predjudices!

Basically, the plane would not take off, because the plane is not moving.

You can throw all the maths at it that you like, but logic > math every time.

The scenario was that there was an aeroplane on a treadmill. And no matter how fast this plane was trying to go... through engine power... the 'treadmill' would counter this speed in the opposite direction.

The entire point of the treadmill is to keep something in one place while the object in question is excerting energy to move it in a constant direction. Thus, in this scenario, there is no forward momentum.

First of all, in order to keep the plane on the treadmill the wheels would have to be connected in some way, in which case, no the plane would not be able to take off.

Second of all, assuming that there was no connection between wheel and treadmill, there'd be no way of keeping the plane stationary, as the friction between wheel and treadmill could never be great enough. Afterall, as TomKat's already said, the engines push the plane forward, not the wheels. The wheels are there solely to control the motion of a plane during take-off/landing/being carted around.

So on that assumption, that the treadmill would never have enough friction to hold on to the plane, and so the plane would just move forward and off of the treadmill until it picked up enough speed to fly.

In conclusion: The plane would not take off while on a treadmill. It'd be propelled forward by the engines; off the treadmill and (hopefully) up the runway. Unless you found a way of keeping the plane stationary while on the treadmill; (which is the only scenario in which this hypothetical could be considered with any serious thought) and any such efforts would stop the plane from taking off.

Answer?

No, that plane aint goin' nowhere.

I don't need to read other people's perceptions and understandings of a hypothetical and unrealistic situation to form the basis of my own thoughts - people are entitled to their opinions; as am I entitled to mine.

I am positively certain that if I read pages 2-6 I'd be presented by (but not inclusive of) a lot of people giving arguments as to why the plane would take off. I even have confidence that a lot of thought has gone into some of these arguments, and that a few of them will be really well structured.

I, however, am of the belief that the plane would not take off, unless you changed the circumstances of the original dilemma mid-experiment.

In order for a plane to take off, there has to be air flowing over it's wings so that when the flaps move from their default position (in alignment with the wing) to their new position, whereby the flaps are pointing in a more upward direction, away from the ground, that is what causes an aircraft to lift.

So in order for this plane to take off while on the treadmill, there'd have to be a bloody great big fan (/other source of air) pushing air at great velocity over the wings for there to be any lift. The original scenario presented no such fan.

The engines are there to provide forward momentum only; it's the movement of the flaps that cause the resistance that moves a plane up or down. So under no circumstances can a plane 'take off' under the original circumstances as laid forth by Ste.

OR is the reason that I should read pages 2-6 because people have finally seen sense, making my arguments pointless because you are all now fully enlightened?

Re: A Plane Problem

basically kenny, the fact that the treadmill moves the same speed as the wheels turn doesn't stop the entire plane moving forward as the power for forward motion doesnt come from the wheels but from the big **** off jet engines.

it slides, and takes off.

We are all glad that you now "agree" so can you please wallow in ignorance alone or read pages 2-6 or maybe drown yourself or something. Anything but carry on this diabolical thread for even one more iteration of who gives a **** if the plane flies, blows up or falls off the edge of the universe. Thanks.

So, the plane has to move forward to take off? I think I said that, didn't it?

So what we're arguing about is not the dynamics of a plane, but the understanding of the original scenario.

The way you're arguing is that the size of the treadmill is the length of the runway, but that's never actually stated. All that's said is that the treadmill /is/ a runway.

If the treadmill was the length of a normal standard runway (proportionate to the size of the plane being used in the experiment) then the wheels would become irrelevent - they'd simply rotate at twice the normal speed as if there weren't a treadmill, and the plane would continue regardless.

But if the wheels were irrelevent, then so would be the speed of the treadmill. And if the speed of the treadmill was irrelevent, then so would be the point of having a treadmill.

So all your saying is that if a plane accellerated down a runway then tried to take off; it would. Well, duh. I guess equations are easier to solve when you ignore all constants and variables!

Basically if the runway was normal size (even if it was a speshal treadmill runway), the original question would just be "Can a plane take off from a runway?".

** I've already said that keeping a plane stationary on a treadmill would be impossible, but as the original question was hypothetical, we must come to a conclusion based solely on the original specifications; that the plane is staying still because it is on a treadmill, and that there is no airflow going over or under the wings. Even the example diagram/gif on the very first post showed the plane not moving forwards (it was stationary relevent to it's position on the treadmill). **

So assuming that the above (the bit highlighted by asterixes) is true, I am right. If the aforementioned part of my post is inaccurate, I concede I'm wrong.

But in this hypothetical situation, the treadmill can move at an infinite speed, thus preventing the plane from moving anywhere, no matter how much force it exerts from its engines.
This was also on the first page, JonnyBGood, and yes I did read Mark's (assuming Mark is MrL_JaKiri) mathematical explanation, and while it is perfect math and does prove that a plane can take off, it isn't addressing the issue of the ---> hypothetical situation <--- that Ste originally stumbled upon.

It's people's understanding of the question which is at issue here, not the dynamics of a plane taking off.

My approval has nothing to do with the laws of science you simpleton. If the plane was powered by it's wheels (we call that a car) then yes, the treadmill matching it's speed would prevent it from attaining velocity. However, a plane is powered by the engines mounted on it's wings. The only thing the wheels are responsible for is lowering friction with the ground by allowing the plane to roll. Therefore when the engines pull the plane forward and the conveyor belt moves in the opposite direction the only noticable result will be that the wheels of the plane will be rolling twice as fast as they would otherwise. Assuming the pilot isn't as slow as you seem to be and takes off the brake.

It is honestly not my responsibility that you can't understand this and I'm certainly not going to bother with you anymore. Perhaps if you weren't too cocksure to even read the excellent explanations laid out by people far smarter than I (and most certainly you) you wouldn't have made such a giant fool of yourself.

edit: And there is airflow going over the wings as, once more, the wheels have no bearing on whether or not the plane moves forward.

The plane is stationary. There is no airflow. There is no takeoff. Read my last post and look at the picture on the very first post.

Just because you're saying I'm unintelligent; doesn't make it true. I'm at university doing a degree course, while the math presented on the first page is GCSE level. Can we work on the assumption I've surpassed the intellectual requirements to obtain GCSE grades please?

I'd also like to point out that just because people disagree on something, doesn't neccessarily make the person who is wrong stupid; some of the brightest minds on this Earth disagree over various matters, but they're still far more intelligent than you or I.

If you can't accept the fact the validity of my arguments just because they're in opposition to your own, then it is you my friend that is the ignorant one.

But I am glad you're going to stop arguing about it.

Re: A Plane Problem

This coming from the person who willfully declined to even read 80% of the thread. If you did you would know that you are the only remaining person on these boards who thinks the plane won't take off. Even Tomkat understands it. Why can't you just read the thread instead of spamming the same inaccuracies that have already been debunked?

The plane will move forward and air will pass over it's wings because there is no way for the conveyor belt to stop that happening. It spins the wheels, certainly, but unless the pilot has the brake on then there is absolutely no way for the wheels to affect the velocity of the plane because they are not involved in its motion at all. (They apply no force in the forward direction.)

Just read the thread dude. Please for ****s sake.

The issue here seems to be that you think the wheels propel the plane and not the engines. They really don't. The plane takes off.

Apparently the issue with Kenny is not that he doesn't understand that an airplane will take off from a treadmill that matches the speed of the aircraft, since the wheel speed, and thus the treadmill are indeed quite irrelevant as to whether the airplane can or can not take off.

The issue is that since there is a hypothetical situation, it must mean that the laws of physics do not apply, and the treadmill in this particular example is of the magical variety that holds an airplane full of elves and faeries with Little Red Riding Hood for a captain and the Big Bad Wolf as the co-pilot, perfectly stationary. Hey, someone even drew a comical sequence of images in which the airplane falls off the treadmill and explodes! That proves that the airplane doesn't take off, since a blown up airplane with faerie corpses and Little Red Riding Hood's left leg sticking out of the wreckage can't fly at all!

Lol.

And yes JohnnyBGood, I realise the engines propel the plane and not the wheels, but if the wheels + treadmill are irrelevent, then why ask the question? That's like saying "If you drop an apple that has a pencil stuck through it, will it still fall to the ground?".

In which case I've looked far too far into this, probably motivated by the boredom of being stuck back at my parent's house for Christmas with nothing better to do. My arguments were all based on the plane being stationary which (before the tragic explosion that killed all those fictional elves and fairies and such) the diagram did show.

Would life not just be boring if everyone agreed with everyone? At no stage did I insult (/me checks) anyone, resort to namecalling or use an extensive array of sweary-words. Even if my arguments were ultimately flawed, you cannot fault the way in which I presented my case.

Given that according to the question the treadmill is only ever going as fast as the jets are propelling the plane forward, then there wouldn't be enough friction generated to keep the plane on the treadmill.

So my concession is this: the logic behind the question is flawed.

Re: A Plane Problem

Of course I can fault it. You didn't read five pages of the thread. I mean really, you can't base your argument on the diagram. If the diagram showed the plane taking off would that mean the plane necessarily took off? It had to show something didn't it?

Exactly. I presented my argument based on my interpretation of the original question (which showed a diagram of the plane dramatically breaking and falling apart) and not the 6 following pages of user-input.

I was answering the question based on there being no proceding answers/arguments. So yes, while there may have been other arguments before I made my point; that doesn't mean I didn't present my arguments well.

The question itself is pointless because the variables that it presented offered little to change the circumstances on standard reality. Because if the wheels and speed of the treadmill are irrelevent, then all the question was asking is 'Can a plane travel down a runway then take off?'.

Where I went wrong was arguing like the question had a point. In order for the question to have a point, the treadmill would be important and there'd have to be some way of keeping the plane stationary on it. In which case my arguments would be valid.

As it turns out, after reading all the pages in the thread ( ), the question is pointless and therefore my arguments are invalid. That doesn't make them lacking in logic, it just means I've wasted time.

But hey, seeing as that's the point of forums I wont feel too hard done by.

Dude, what you did is the internet equivalent of being involved at the very start of a conversation, leaving for ages then coming back and butting in at a later point as if you never left and giving your opinion. Things will most likely have moved on and you are quite simply being rude.

That will generate hostility in any walk of life.

No, it will fall down until the pencil sticking out of it will lodge itself into Newton's skull, killing him and leaving us without gravity forever, which additionally proves that airplanes can take off of any non-sticky surface since there is no gravity holding it down.

Re: A Plane Problem

Kenny's problem seems to be 'why would you ask such a stupid question' and he's tearing down bits of the hypothetical situation because 'there'd be no point in having a runway-sized treadmill with a plane on it so it'. If that's the case, you must be a real ****ing blast when watching a movie.

Re: A Plane Problem

The plane won't take off unless it can move forward. However, the treadmill will not stop the plane from moving forward no matter how fast it moves. Unless of course it spins so quickly that it causes time to run backward in which case the plane will eventually disassemble and ultimately return to the raw materials from which it was made.
