Well , at least i hope I do.

See, the local ISP here, in its infinite wisdom, doesnt offer a news server. Thus i need a news server i can connect through to get at the newsgroups. which im reliably informed are not currently subject to the draconian methods being adopted by the Islands biggest ISP.

So you guys will help me out here, right?

erm it depends what binary groups you want access to. I've never really bothered about it cos i never had a fast enough connection to get all the rars before they disappeared.

First off, see what binary groups you can get for free, with like ntl or freeserve.

news.ntlworld.com doesn't require you to login but it may need you to be connecting from an NTL address, i don't know

i have a reasonably fast connection. However i need to be able to connect to a news server which DOESNT involve my ISP. NTLWorld does appear to be beyond me.

Indeed I do. Alas, when i try and download from it, it tells me "An Unknown response was received from the news server news.ntlworld.com".

What i need is a public newserver, preferably not tied to a specific ISP (As those will inevitably require a logon through that ISP) through which i can access the majority of public newsgroups.

as far as im aware kura you cannot get binaries for free if your isp does not provide them.

this is because that uses a ****load of bandwidth (40gb a day i was told when i was working at an isp)

i could be wrong, but thats as far as i know.

binaries = downloading files, essentially.

You arent going to get binaries newsgroup access for free if your ISP isnt carrying them; be prepared to pay 10-20 pound a month or thereabouts. If you just want usenet for reading the many multifaceted and stimulating discussions that take place there rather than to download files, youll be able to get free access.
