I'd always believed this was one of those wishful thinking things that nobody ever thought about twice.

Why could you possibly care about the policies of a President you're voting in solely to be ineffectual? Why isn't 'vote for me, i don't control congress' the slogan of the kerry campaign?

That's not really it, I was being a bit glib. It's just that people don't want politcians to have unlimited powers, and having a congress / president with different political colours is a useful way of doing this.

Imagine on the ballot papaer it said :

Bush - With Loads of Power
Bush - With a Moderate Amount of Power
Kerry - WIth Loads of Power
Kerry - With a Moderate Amount of Power

Which would you tick? Do you really like John Kerry that much?

edit : Also, John Kerry running as representing "the party that doesn't control Congress" might hurt the Democrat's trying to make gains in Congress, heh.

yessir, the kind of bills they start passing when they think they can get away with anything aren't usually the type that help people, but only the type that help their own party and their supporters.
