So the Police seem to be doing a good job
I have to admit, after the attempt at a second round of bombings I was highly sceptical that the police would be able to catch anyone. After all, if they managed to let the second attempt take place, with everything on high alert, what chance did they have of finding them when they'd gone to ground.
The shooting of that poor Brazillian guy did little to reassure me either.


However, on top of the arrest of the first suspect a couple of days ago, within the last few minutes it seems another two of them have been caught in more armed raids (source).
If this story turns out to be correct, I will be quite impressed. Sure it's taken them a week to get to this stage, but the fact that they've managed to contain at least three of them and mount such a large operation in such a short time deserves some praise. Maybe people will regain some faith after that fatal blunder in the immediate aftermath.

Well the top cop (Blair, not the PM) was criticising the Brummie cops for using a tazer on on of the suicide bomber suspects as it could have set off a suicide vest (if he was wearing one). Kinda sends out a mixed message, really.

Edit: Well done though for arresting so many people, although it will be interesting to see how many are actually convicted.

The apparent disagreement between Ian Blair and West Midlands Police is interesting, although I suspect it's partially down to Ian not knowing the facts mixed with quotes taken out of context.
What is also mildly amusing is Police Complaints Commission telling the Home Office that they should "stop issuing partial information" and to "shut up" until all the facts were clear, after the HO raised questions about Mr Menezes' immigration status.

Ah, politics. How much smoother the world could run without it.

Didn't someone (here) offer that as a suggestion to why tasers weren't used previously, only to be laughed at?

On the original topic, I don't see why it would be difficult to catch the people responsible. The first lot didn't seem to do much to conceal their identity which led to their home addresses, etc. They found a bunch of evidence (apparently) which led to other addresses being put under surveillance and a whole list of other names.

Considering they already must have a fair amount of names in some sort of "potential terrorist" database, it's just a matter of comparing CCTV footage with what they already have (and appealing to the public for names). Once they had the names / photos of the people they were looking for it doesn't seem to be that complicated to track them down. Keep in mind the police have an entire nation's infrastructure at their disposal vs. a small cell of people some of whom can't even leave the country with a relatively low level of support in their community.

It seems like it only becomes hard to catch people when they have a broad level of support in their community and people are willing to hide them, etc. In at least one case here one of the suspects family phoned up to give his name.

I was very surprised that they hadn't fled the country. That would have been the first thing I'd have done (before the Police had a chance to release all those CCTV images, which would obviously make escape considerably harder).

Why did one of them say he was scared to come out when armed police were surrounding the flat? I found the fact that he was willing to blow himself to pieces a week ago but is now suddenly such a scaredy-cat to be quite amusing.

btw, a question for Londoners : will you feel confident enough to use public transport next thursday?
