Professional 5 a side football
Which club do you think would have the best team in a 5 a side tournament? What team would you pick?
For instance...
Chelsea:
Cudicini
Terry
Lampard/Duff
Mutu
Although you could replace Franky with Makelele if you'd prefer a more defensive bent.
Can you think of a team that is better than that? What about your club?
(Poom/Breen/Arca/Thornton/Stewart)

Re: Professional 5 a side football
Any way i think about it, Celtic would suck at that. Our holding midfielders are pretty shitty, and Liam miller wouldnt have room to race past folk / skin the **** out of them. Neither sutton or Hartson really is the best an for the job either. Plus, although bobo is our best defender (and one of the best there is) playing a one man defence with the combined distribution of Douglas and Balde = you lose.
Douglas
Balde
Thompson
Larsson
Hartson
With larsson playing withdrawn, and fatty on a diet. But its still a terrible lineup.

It depends how you play it; on a small pitch, I'd prefer Duff and his better close control/defender beating abilities. However, if it were 5 a side on a large pitch, then Veron would be superb for it; positively made for it in fact. His playing style (driving from deep and controlling distribution) suits a more open game down to the ground.
The more open pitch would also help your Celtic side, although it would be biased in favour of great passers, like Beckham, Veron and Gerrard, as opposed to the close control merchants of Cage style games.

We would win. With Friedel stood in the middle of the 5 a side nets nobody would score past him.
Friedel
Neil
Tugay
Emerton
Cole

I actually would have said it the other way around. But i think the "size of pitch" we're both imagining is quite different. Im imagining 5 a side "courts" - if youve ever player at any of the 'Goals' chain. Although duff's trickery would be invaluable, id much prefer Veron for his strength and his one touch passings.
PS, i meant to say to you before.
Stan Varga has been a frickin revelation for us. Seriously. With both Johan Mjallby and Joos Valgaeren out, the obvious covers were Ulrik Laursen who played a lot last year, but hes injured, and Stephen Crainey - who played half a game, got an assist, and picked up an injury ( ). So Jackie McNamara (who isnt the worlds best full back, never mind centre back) and Stan Varga have been playing alongside the Bobo for us.
The result? Played 12 games in the SPL, let in three goals. Played four games in the CL, let in three goals.
And his passing isnt half bad either, hes even chipped in a goal

Re: Professional 5 a side football
Id have to say given the physical aspect of five a side youd be suprised whod come out with wins. Would you like to face savage in five a sides?
Bet van nistelrooy and pires would still dive too, pity the rules are more lax in 5 a side courts

Get your coat.
Also, having seen Joe Cole play a lot in the west ham youth team, he'd be in any Chelsea 5 aside team, with the additional space he'd get, his tricks would be a huge asset.

Thing is, he, like Thome, was one of the marginalised defenders, and thus never got a chance to form any kind of partnership; in addition, Peter Reid isn't exactly the best person to control a large squad.

I dont think he is a bad keeper so to speak, but, I think Taylor has the potential to be a future england keeper, and should have been given the chance.

Shut up, SHUT UP, SHUT UP.
PS Lehmann hasn't done a single thing so far to convince me he's anything above mediocre. He's not on the David James level of clanger every other game but he hardly adds anything to an already shaky back-line. For the top two Howard looks much the better buy, although that might be due to Utd's defence settling down a bit more this season (before the ferdinand incident that is which will doubtlessly **** things up again).

Re: Professional 5 a side football
We'd rock at that.
It's a well known fact that Hoddle spent every training session showing off in the 5-a-sides.
(If only we has him back now we'd actually win something )

No way would you ever play Hartson.
EVER!
Have you played fives?
You run and run and run and run.
Running isn't Hartsons strong point.
Also with Sutton you have a player who can play in any role who in addition can score.
Personally i prefer Hedman to Douglas too.

In five asides you need pace and ball control. Obviously the winners every single time if this was real would be Madrid.
Casillas
<random shmuck>
Figo, Ronaldo, Raul, Zidane (three of)
Actually scratch the random shmuck, that team would just score too many goals to be stopped.

I was thinking of the traditional 5 a side size pitch, but yes, you can get larger ones and they could be useful there.

Beckham would have to get in there somewhere, due to his workrate/fitness at the very least.

It really all depends on the size of pitch. You're all going for pacy teams, on the pitch im thinking of your teams would get ****ed.

I was thinking of fit players with a good first touch and good close control.
My team would be:
Keller
Robbie Keane
Robbie Keane
Robbie Keane
Robbie Keane

The only question is which one of them would get injured running onto the pitch!

Keller
King
Mabizela
Dalmat

I can imagine.
Waterreus would just stand there.
Hofland would look at the opposing team and get injured. Before the game starts.
Van Bommel would be kicking ankles left and right. Including the referee's.
Robben would be falling over and demanding a yellow card. Before anyone else enters the pitch.
Kezman would promise to score, but fail to do so because the opposing team isn't FC Volendam.

I fail to see how a beautiful 60 yard pass directly to the feet of your own player is useful in a 5 a side, considering even the largest pitches aren't that large. Curling free kicks wouldn't help either, and when choosing just 5 players, going on workrate probably wouldn't be too wise.

The highlight of the season being that in any direct confrontation, Ajax wouldn't leave the pitch alive either.

Especially for the occasion, we'll drug up Faber so that young Z. can instantly say goodbye to an otherwise promising looking international carreer.

Re: Professional 5 a side football
Neil Alexander
Danny Gabbiadon
Graham Kavanagh / Richard Langley
Robert Earnshaw
and I would say Madrid would probably have the best team.

Re: Professional 5 a side football
Wapenaar - Quick reactions
Linvoy - Ability to get it OUT
Faye - general ability to be everywhere at once
Berger - skilful flair player
Sheringham - intelligence up front
'ave it
But no one's going to beat Real in this
CLEARLY.
