1. Elite
2. Civ
3. Ultima Underworld 1
4. Warcraft 2
5. Championship Manager(s)
Didnt take much time to think about it so maybe 4 and 5 need replacement later on
*changed #4 from Baldur's gate to Warcraft 2
* replaced #5 Doom with Champ.Man

Championship managers (in general, they don't differ that much from each other)
Syndicate (would have to go here in lack of a better cyberpunk-feelish game)

Syndicate is the best clearly, but you have to factor in original nintendo, in which case the list is as follows:
1) Dink Smallwood (pc, www.cnet.com get it!)
2) Zelda
3) Super Mario Brothers 3
4) Castlevania 2, Simons quest
Onto sega genesis
5) Golden Axe
Oh! IB, Zombies at my neighbors rules!

yep, the grahpics are utter ****e, it just makes you think its pretty with all 3dyness. As for the controls I found them simple after you go into it
btw whoever said dune II - it was utter wank, c&c ra was the best game of its time and I still install it sometimes to play it. Best strategy game ever and prob will never be beat

it's only boring if:
a) you play single-player
or
b) you're crap at it.
Neither applies to me so \o/

The original Age of Empires was cool (if only it didnt ahve a stupid 50 unit limit) - if you typed "pow" into the chat box you got a little baby on a trike with a shotgun.
I didnt really like UT. Those sort of games are too "rush about shooting anything that moves"... I prefer using tactics with games like Operation Flashpoint, although sometimes a little rambo is called for .
This one time, at band camp...

Half Life is the best single player FPS I have ever played
Fallout 2 is the best RPG I have ever played
Both of these are pre 2000. Admittedly though I haven't played that many games.
The only other pre 2000 game worth mentioning is UFO: Enemy Unknown. I would also say Civ II but Civ III is better so I won't.

1) ff7 - i'm yet to find a game that i can obsess over as much. hell i got a tear in my eye when aeris died. UI'd never played an rpg before and it really opened my eyes to what computer games could be.
2) tetris fs - Always a classic
3) ff6 (ff3 us) amaqzing for when it was released. i downloaded it and it was well worth the 5 minutes it took
4)parasite eve 1 - bought it on import for £60 when i was on my ff7 buzz, not as good as ff7 but well worth the money. at 15 £60 is a hell of alot. it had a story better than most movies out there.
5) argg cant think of anything. I'll go for the original mario
