[Football] WC 2006 Qualifiers
Tomorrow the draw will be for the World Cup 2006 (in Germany) qualifiers. Teams have been divided across the lottery bowls as follows:
Quote:
Group 1: France, Portugal, Sweden, Czech Republic, England, Spain, Italy, Turkey
Group 2: Netherlands, Croatia, Belgium, Denmark, Russia, Ireland, Bulgaria, Slovenia
Group 3: Poland, Romania, Scotland, Serbia and Montenegro, Switzerland, Greece, Ukraine, Slovakia
Group 4: Austria, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israël, Latvia, Wales
Group 5: Hungary, Georgia, Belarus, Cyprus, Estonia, North-Ireland, Lithuania, Macedonia
Group 6: Albania, Armenia, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Faroër Islands, Malta, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Luxembourg, Andorra, Kazachstan
|
Apparently there will be three poules with 7 teams in, rather than 6.
I'm personally hoping for Sweden, England or Turkey to be drawn into the poule with the Netherlands.

Re: [Football] WC 2006 Qualifiers
Only 13 teams out of that big list actually go through (the group winners, best two runners-up and 3 playoff winners from the other 2nd place teams)
that leaves a lot of disappointed countries (coughwalesscotlandirelandcough)
For the first time in the tournament's history the reigning champions, Brazil, have not been given an automatic place at the finals. WHY?!

Because they should be good enough to qualify for the next tournament anyway.
Its also of benefit to them as they get to play proper matches rather than spending their build up to the World Cup just playing meaningless friendlies.

Please no. I would die if we ended up in the same group as England. I may want you to win but to lose to you is th ultimate shame :/
Group 4 seems a bit harsh on Wales and Latvia though.

We're not going to qualify anyways, so it's all in vain.

It's based on previous world and european cups.
I want to know why the hell Kazakhstan are in the European pools for the first time! Will anyone actually want to fly out there to play them? I think not!

They might be very successfull that way. If no1 wants to play them they will automatically win all their home games by 3-0 . That's 15 easy points .

Re: [Football] WC 2006 Qualifiers
18 easy points, they are in one of the 7 teamed groups, arent they?
Frankly almost any draw Scotland gets mean we're ****ed.
Every team in pool A will screw us over. Pool B gives us either a good shout, or we're proper ****ed.
I cant believe we made it to pool C, we're so ****ing shit. Some of the pool D members look dangerous too.
Best possible group :
Sweden
Slovenia
Scotland
Israel
Estonia
Liechenstein
Andorra
Worst Possible Group:
France
Holland
Scotland
Norway
Hungary
Azerbaijan

Re: [Football] WC 2006 Qualifiers
isn't the draw starting today at 1605 (ie. 10 mins ago?)
anyone got a live draw link?
I've been looking at the official http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/t/draw.html but there is nothing there (that I can see)

Because they've joined the UEFA last year or so. Technically Kazachstan is partially located in Europe, and is thus able to play games in the European league, rather than the Asian one. Pretty much the same goes for Russia.
The only real exception is Israël, which is simply in the UEFA because everyone else hates them.

The site you linked to tells you the draw starts 5 CET
Which is in roughly 50 minutes, although undoubtedly the actual drawing will take place later in the ceremony.

Re: [Football] WC 2006 Qualifiers
doh! I'd read 1605 a couple of days ago, and assumed that was the German time, so I was taking an hour off it like we used to do in some space game I vaguely remember
EDIT also the "watch live draw" button wasn't there when I loaded the page. They must have put it on between my posting and you pointing out the obvious.

13, 14 including Germany.
8 group winners.
2 best runners up.
Then the other 6 teams enter a play off where the 3 winners will qualify.

I don't think I have ever been looking forward to something as much yet dreading it as well.
At least I know I will get tickets, would hate that to be the first game I miss for years. Hopefully it will be about game 3 in the Millennium Stadium, Giggs is back and still nice and early in the campaign before everyone is depressed realising we can't qualify.

you mean people without sky won't be happy?
but even then, most people watch it down the pub
so in fact you mean, the few people interested in football, who don't have sky and don't watch big games down the pub won't be happy
so in fact, two of you, won't be happy

****ing Excellent Draw for Scotland.
I think we can do Italy @ Hampden , and Norway look very poor internationally in the last few years. As long as Tore Andre Flo plays , we will piss on them
