Ok , Officially , MMORPG's are just ****ing scary now.

There are no words to describe my feelings over someone paying this much money for a virtual world. None whatsoever.

Yeah, I saw that elsewhere.
Frankly, it's more the fault of idiots with disposable incomes than anything else.

It attracts the kind of people who think that they can play the system, and can't.

i have no familiarity with the game, but if the guy can farm (or whatever) some of the land and sell of the rest, he can probably make it back. Of course, getting a job would be easier.

Re: Ok , Officially , MMORPG's are just ****ing scary now.
It is entirely possible that he knows what he is doing.
I haven't played the game, so I have no idea how the economy works in there. But say he manages to sell plots of land for $50 to, say, 200 people, that's $10.000 already back in his pocket. And apparently he can tax people for what they do on his island, so that's another steady albeit smaller income he's getting. It all really depends on how willing other people are to invest RL money into the game, and unless he really is ****ed in the head, he should have a decent outlook on that particular detail.

exactly what i was thinking. he may not be that stupid at all, when everyone in that game uses real money as described in the story.
Quote:
ISLAND PACKAGE
A unique castle (furniture not included)
Hunting
Mining rights
Taxation rights on hunting and mining activities
Income from the sale of land lots

i can imagine he may make some nice moneys with this buy...

Besides the gaming marathons and sleep deprivation deaths, I'm pretty sure I've heard about game dispute related murders. Although they were all koreans.

Re: Ok , Officially , MMORPG's are just ****ing scary now.
From what i can gather, there is sufficient interest generated by the incorparation of real money to have attracted a host of wealthy players= profit to be made.
Numerous studies have shown that those who find themselves most addicted to computer games [I have metally put myself in this category....] tend to find the "locus of control" outside their influences in either their daily lives or their most significant relationships. This leads to lowered self-esteem, lack of power etc. Which is why they love to live in "fantasy" worlds- where they themselves are the protangonist, they have the things they can never achieve in the real world- power, status wealth etc.- the world revolves around them, and their decisions.
Interesting if anything....

Re: Ok , Officially , MMORPG's are just ****ing scary now.
Tbh the bbc have been churning out x amount of articles over the last year (with regards to their technology journalists) that are basically
<MMORPG>
<Something Ridiculous that people might not relate too i.e. Person dying at PC/Unfathomable amount of $$$ spent on intellectual property of a company/Some High School Drama that became some sort of Internet Fad for a month>
<Economy = to GDP of Bulgaria/Namibia/any other random not very well known country>
<Amount of people that play it>
Seem to churn one out every three months, or more frequently if they can find anything slightly unique sounding...

But i never said i had any sort of qualification relating to psychology,
All i was doing was relating a bit of knowledge that i had accumalated to GD, in the hopes that it would be a fitting contribution to the conversation. The fact that i don't have a Phd in psychology should not take away from either its relevance, or the [hopefully] interest the other GD readers may have in it.

I`ve not had the time to read the whole of this thread, but I get the gist, in relation to a different issue which I won`t mention at present. Suffice to say...surely the tax man will be interested in such said profits made in cyber space? Real or not, monies have been transacted. Discuss please...

$26k
hmmmmm
$ does this symbol not singfy, or is most commonly associated with the word "dollar",
And in turn, that word is universally understood to be a term used to describe an amount of "currency" or "money". the k signifies thousands.
I would worry if GD couldn't follow a train of thought involving more than two steps,
But i know you can, so i won't worry! :-)

Trying too hard to be pedantic. The art of pedantry is something done with wit, sarcasm, and avoidance of sounding dark and superior. Grasp these concepts young Jedi, and you too could one day be JonnyBGood.

I was wondering where that came from....
But I did not think it that apt, I am hardly one to conform to traditionally rules- whether they be learning [pedant!] or in terms of outlook etc.

"I am hardly one to conform to traditionally rules" makes no sense. The word traditionally is just randomly thrown in there for purposes of excessive verbosity.

It does make sense.
"I am hardly one to conform to traditionally rules"
Breaking it into syntactic analysis, with [SVO components] and {modifiers}:
[i] [am {hardly}] [one [to conform] [to {traditionally} rules]]]
Normally here we would expect "traditionally" to be modifying "rules", but this makes no sense as "traditionally" is an adverb. Hence it must be modifying the verb, but in that case we'd expect "to conform traditionally".
But there is another analysis:
[i] [am {hardly}] [one [to conform to {traditionally}] [rules]]
"to conform to traditionally" makes sense, and then "rules" is thrown in as the final complement of the subordinate clause. Of course, this does not scan so well, but it is still correct grammar, and also makes sense.
(Note: For ease of explanation, I have analysed the copula "to be" as a separate verb, and as the predicate element in this sentence, rather than using "to be" as an auxiliary and then having the noun phrase as a non-verbal predicate. Makes no difference to our purposes here, however.)

Not really. KraKto$is8 has just extensively demonstrated he doesn't know when to add the suffix -ly to words. Or use punctuation. One of the two.
Edit: Wrong name there, and there is an alternative explanation. He's still wrong on one count, though.

Im pretty sure when you look at the context, the word that would have made the sentence correct was "Traditionality" , not "Traditionally".
I sense no ownage here.

Or "traditional". But nevertheless, the sentence makes sense as it stands.

Re: Ok , Officially , MMORPG's are just ****ing scary now.
Your morphosyntactic breakdown was incorrect, as it was based on the logical fallacy that if individual elements are correct, the result of combining them must automatically also be correct. Without paying attention to the structure of the sentence as a whole.
