Well surely if they were going to use the equipment to pick the man up they had assessed that he was in a safe position to be moved.
There is no equipment (afaik) that is used to pick someone up that in a situation where the possible damage of moving the patient is unknown.
Neck braces etc are commonly used, but they would have those in the ambulance.
I'm going with the 'pick the poor bastard off the floor' option.
