Learning an instrument
Does anyone learn an instrument by themselves (well, informally talking to other musicians perhaps) or are lessons the way to go? I've got a saxophone I played for a while when I was 11, and a guitar, some ska punk inspiration, and and lots of spare time.

Re: Learning an instrument
You can pretty much teach yourself from books/instructional video's so long as you also have an audiable version of the music accompanying what you are playing.

Re: Learning an instrument
I taught myself guitar over the past number of years, its not that difficult. You definatley need a good instructional book or magazine series. Alot of the current books that are about are useless old ones that make you play some shite nursery rhymes, folk songs or other pap. Try to get a more modern one for beginners, as soon as you build up the basics (stick with it, this is the most difficult part) you'll be set as you can then tackle most Guitar Tab books at your own pace.
Its really handy to have a form of expression at your fingertips such as guitar or another musical instrument.
Plus if you can remember your musical training from before then it should be even easier for you to pick stuff up.

For anyone on the south coast look for my mates ska band - The Ferrangs. They're from Bournemouth, supported Kosheen at the uni carnival and are really good (cheesy tho)

Re: Learning an instrument
Lessons aren't really neccessary. I know loads of people that self-taught themselves guitar, and none that had lessons. Although I tried teaching myself ukulele and never got further than 'She'll be Coming Round the Mountains'.

Re: Learning an instrument
It's actually a really good instrument if you can play it, and I've seen some serious skill on this 'how to play' video I bought.

Re: Learning an instrument
I play the cello... For 10 years now even.
Could've NEVER taught it myself though. Far too complex and difficult. As far as I know there are now real "DIY" instructional books about it anyway.
I think it's true for at least all strings that you cannot teach them yourself really*
* Guitar doesn't count, everybody knows that lots of people actually do learn it on their own. Also you might be able to to teach yourself viola, if you know how to play the violin (not sure about cello & contrabass though, I slightly doubt it).

Re: Learning an instrument
I learnt how to play the drums by myself, and it gave me a good way to teach people too.
I got taught how to play the trumpet however
