I would say that it depends on the prostitute and the situation. There was a case in London a while ago where a women had had her feet broken so she couldn't get away from her pimp or something, and was expected to "service" customers in the normal fashion. I'd say you have a fair amount of moral responsibility if you notice the whore you're banging just happens to have broken feet, Misery style.

But if I was single, and an intelligent attractive young woman who I could be reasonably sure was disease free said she would sleep me for £50 or something, I might consider it. Depending on how attractive she was / how long it'd been /e etc.

Nothing represents the capitalist system quite like prostitution.

The bourgeois man traditionally, has been expected to marry the bourgeois woman - perhaps the daughter of a fellow capitalist - a union with which will expand and grow both financial concerns. Love is abolished and we are left with nothing but raw capitalist relations. This is an outgrowth of feudal relations which existed with "nobility" marrying each other for the sake of lineage or titles.

But this does not satisfy the bourgeois man. His woman will grow disinterested. His all-encompassing love of money soon grows to eclipse the love of his wife and she will not desire him any longer. Instead, her passions will turn towards proleterian or peasant stock - perhaps the gardener or plumber, or simply a working man she meets in a bar.

The bourgeois man is incensed. Here, the theoretically controller of society sits impotent (often literally) in his fortified house. Frightened to leave the front door and walk the streets because of "crime" (minorities) the power he wields is revealed to be the cruel joke that it is.

His women is drawn to the physical and emotionl rawness of the worker, and he is powerless to stop her going. How can he retaliate? He is invariably fat and generally ugly (either emotionally or physically). So how can he rob the proleterians of their women? How can he meet his needs?

The answer quite simply, is prostitution. What more obviously capitalist solution is there to a problem? No-one desires to perform the task without incentive so he buys the labour of others to do it. While he has no capability for love he still has passions and can only fulfill these (barely) with prostitution - either openly (in brothels, or on street corners) or more tacitly, with 'mistresses' for whom he buys lavish presents and gifts. In either case the result is the same : the bourgeois man, his emotional heart and physical genetalia shrivelled by his worship of money enjoys relations with women who would show no interest save for his bank account.

People who condemn prostitution under capitalism miss the point. Capitalism is prostitution and their can be no division of the two.

Capitalist traits have existed in all societies. For instance, the Greek world had some wage labour - it just wasn't the dominant form of economic activity.

Similarly, while prostitution has existed in many different types of society it is only under modern capitalism that the whoring of all woman reaches its peak.
