If it isn't distance related, I'm going to ship one RM from one end of known space to the other 5 times in 6 months just to blast the space-time continuim to bits. *marks PK's budget for further auditing, for insolence*

Freighter Distances
Freighters can haul cargo (for the purpose of trading) 10 hexes every turn. This translates (as far as I'm concerned) to a maximum of six round trips in-system per turn.

Re: Planet Wars: Redux

"All
Just assume that two thirds of your workers went on strike and that they're demaining two Parks and an Entertainment Complex.

(Fluffie made me do this)"

Also if you've got unemployed they're demonstrating and demanding jobs.

And if you've already got some of these facilities then lessen the number of strikers.

The above be referring to the Labour Day DM he wasn't getting around to do

Less strikers, does not, mean less demands.

Because he's evil.

Re: Planet Wars: Redux

*ND flicks on a solitary, bare lightbulb and looks around before clearing his throat*

Roll Call
Centauri Prime - Terra (???)
Nova Centauri - Wo2 (!!)
Sanchean - Lakhim (!!)
New Tokyo - KoL (!!)
Teian Point - Hewitt (!*)
Elyssium - Crazy (??)
Cienelle - Bakan (!!)
Freiland - Inspectre (!!)
Stygis - Disrupter (???)
Ios - Fluffie (!!!)
Earth - IB (!*)
Harn's World - Ryon (???)
New Roma - Zappa (---)
Sulphos - Flaag (???)
Tau Ceti Prime - PK (!!)
Tau Ceti Septus - Phang (???)

!* Denotes a person who will be returning as long as I agree to fulfill certain conditions (the only one in this tree presently is IB, who wants me to do the Tier 3 tech tree early so he doesn't plateau).
!! Denotes a person who has confirmed their intent to play if the thread is revived.
?? Denotes a person who I remember was still playing at the time of postponement and whose confirmation is desired.
??? Denotes a person who I can't remember was playing or not.

We'll need a reasonable number of players to keep the thread interesting. I can't promise frequent DMing, but hopefully we'll be able to get a decent thread running all the same. We will be playing on this forum with budgets submitted to the DM by email for confirmation and processing. New players are welcome provided that we get enough returning players to restart the thread in the first place. Old players wishing to see the thread revived are advised to prod other former players who have not yet done so to confirm their presence here, if indeed they are interested in continuation.

Revisions of the game mechanics are not prmised, but may occur in order to facilitate actually running the thing.

well, I forgot this thread even existed, and seriously doubt I'll be willing to reread everything that has happened so far to get back into the story etc, so if you're just going to continue where we left off, I don't think I'll be playing

Re: Planet Wars: Redux

Potential New Players
Planet Wars is a strategy thread of stellar proportions, casting you as the leader of one of the newly independent former colonies of Earth cut free from the Old Nations following the cataclysmic End War. In this new age of expansion, of exploitation of resources more rapid than ever before, of warfare and diplomatic intrigue, you will be responsible for managing your planet's government, for forming its budget, for commanding its military strategy and for interacting through diplomacy with player planets and NPC worlds.

We'll be picking up from where we left off in the developement of this fractured little human proto-empire:

The year is 2097 AD...

A worrying schism within the League of Planets between the Inner Sphere and the Fringe Worlds, who are presently attending a conference on Teian Point (Hewitt) to discuss a closer common diplomatic line, neatly divides all the colonies of man just when two major threats call for a united front. Piracy, the newly revived threat to humanity's prosperity, runs rife in the Outer Fringe, even as the fledgling Frontier Alliance - Freiland (Inspectre), the Kingdom of Ios (Fluffie) and the Republic of Cienelle (Bakan) - aided by Tau Ceti Prime (PK) and the Kingdom of Elyssium (Crazy), both nations similarly at threat from pirate activty, celebrate the destruction of the first known pirate base in the Inner Sphere, though privately Iosi scientists are beginning to look anxiously at the results of analysis of data taken from the base's computer mainframe. Meanwhile, in the isolated Western Fringe, two remote worlds have been destroyed utterly by unknown attackers, sparking a wave of panic all through the region. As rumour abounds that the two planets were obliterated by long-forbidden nuclear weaponry, a small listening post in the far Northern Fringe reports that it has recieved signals from beyond the void that look as though they might be some form of communication.

If they return to the game, we can also expect to see IB's fascist Earth annexing Mars and sparking a cold war with the powerful commercial world of Uranus; and KoL and Lakhim destroying eachother in rain and counter-rain of forbidden weaponry - which I'm sure will happen sooner or later even if neither of them have made an IC move yet.

Re: Planet Wars: Redux

The list is really starting to fill out now. But, we're still missing a KoL, a Crazy (he will be rejoining with previous position, I am sure, as soon as he gets the internet again) and a Hewitt. The others are all either those whose presence at the end of the last thread I'm unsure of, or who have already concerned they won't be playing (Zappa ).

Re: Planet Wars: Redux

Bah, you realise this is going to be a serious detriment to my education?

Meh.

*Signs his name in big red letters on the roster, followed by many exclaimation points.*

(On a more serious note - don't expect much from me for a week or so, I've been trying to find time to write a reply in the colonies thread but I'm that buried in work atm that coming up with but a single paragraph has been painful. Of course, there's that plus I need time to remember how I was going to take complete control of the universe again. )

edit - I have a few conditions however: that we start from EXACTLY where we left off from before and, same as IB, that you do the third tier of research.

I got the first destroyer class vessel built in the thread, there's no way in hell I'm giving up that advantage.

ND's Plan of Action
The next turn of Planet Wars will not tick over until I have completed the Tier 3 tech tree according to certain individuals' requests, and until I'm satisfied that you've all remembered more-or-less what you were doing in terms of diplomacy and the like by the end of the last thread. To keep you all interested, I'll post a story post (maybe two!) to continue on with the thread's overarching plotline (where we left off, an evil but currently nameless - as far as you're concerned - Admiral had just completely destroyed two Fringe planets).

So, in conclusion, find your old records again and check them over to see what you were doing, re-open dialogue with your former allies, and refine your various long-term strategies. If you haven't already posted a budget for the turn of the game we're currently on (ask the Auditor which year it is - I'm sure he'll know), do so.

Mao
Any ideas on which planet you'd like to be?

Re: Planet Wars: Redux

Drug Craze Continues as Scientists Report Worrying Finds (the Uranus Observer)

Uranus, Sol System: As use of the latest fashionable narcotic on the market - "Jump", which first appeared on the Inner Sphere's so-called "rave circuit" three months ago - continues to increase, anxiety is beginning to sound from medical researchers about what many frequent users percieve to be the new "clean" drug. A large number of scientists and medical proffessionals have already expressed concern at the drug's frighteningly addictive nature, but two recent findings are undoubtedly going to add to the present list of Jump's negative effects.

The first discovery was announced last week at the University of Earth in this paper's home system of Sol, when a team of researchers announced the worrying results of their scheme of tracking the medical conditions of several known users. Initially, it appeared as though claims that the drug had no negative side effects for personal health were going to be vindicated with the study's results; there were no noticeable discrepancies between the personal health of the Jump addicts and the personal health of the regular control group subjects. "We were surprised by the initial findings," Dr Fred Kenneth told the Uranus Observer, "normally allegedly 'clean' drugs like Jump turn out to be far from it. But there were no changes to the personal health of regular users - it was only once we began to look deeper that we found something worrying." Pursuing their investigation further, the team from the University of Earth received permission to examine the subjects' hospital records, where previously their conditions had been monitored by regular interviews with team members. On reviewing each of the Jump subjects' records individually, the team were alarmed to find that, of the ten female test subjects who were known to have become pregnant during their use of the narcotic, seven had miscarried and the remaining three had given birth to infants with severe birth defects. On reporting the insults of the investigation to their colleagues on offworld institutions, the Earth research team found that the alarming effects of the drug on pregnancy that they had observed were evident elsewhere as well. "Our studies indicate that, when consumed during pregnancy, Jump has an extremely high chance of causing extremely severe problems for the unborn infant's development," Dr Kenneth concluded in his interview with the Observer, "the range and the severity of defects in the infants - both those alive and those that were unfortunatly never given the chance - is perhaps what is most alarming about the results of the study." Although the findings have yet to be officially recognised by any planetary health organisation, medical institutions throughout the Inner Sphere have warned female users of the drug not to consume it whilst in pregnancy.

The second revelation was announced today by the Iosi Royal Insitute of Medical Science. Several months ago, after a highly successful military operation to neutralise a newly-established pirate base in System N-123C, Iosi Royal Marines under General Lars van der Braade seized data detailing the composition of an unrecognised but highly complex molecule that a doctor attached to the Company happened to recognise as similar in structure to a number of drugs he had come into contact with at medical school. On the advise of said doctor, the data was dispatched immediately to the Royal Institue of Medical Science on Ios for further study. After several months of analysis, the RIMC announced its findings today. The results caused an immediate and fearful reaction, both from people and various governments in the Inner Sphere and elsewhere. "We can confirm," Proffessor Lauren Caul told assembled media representatives at a press conference in Ios' capital, "that the data seized on N-123C I did detail the composition of the narcotic widely known as 'Jump'." The drug's link to the sinister and frequently very well-organised Southern Fringe Pirate Clans has triggered a wave of government legislation throughout the Inner Sphere, all with the intention of cracking down on and halting its use altogether on their respective worlds. With Jump's exact link to the Southern Pirate Clans unknown, speculation is rife throughout the security business and a number of military organisations as to what, exactly, that link could be.

-Ex-Russian Federation war criminal Gregor Sokinov has been executed by firing squad at the League of Planets Headquarters. He was recently found guilty of the massacre of 6,000 European Federation prisoners during the End War by the League War Crimes Tribunal.

-The League of Nations' Disaster Investigation Committee has finally confirmed that the planets of Western Frontier and Northwest Outpost were destroyed using nuclear weapons. A Committee spokesman declined further comment, and confirmed that further investigation into the exact nature of each atocity is ongoing.

-Computing engineering industry insiders are hinting that a major breakthrough in silcon computer chip technology - which many engineers believe will be the last possible development in the chips' speed and power - may be drawing near. Scientists in a large number of fields have expressed excitement at the new possibilities introduced by the so-called "final silicon computers".

Re: Planet Wars: Redux

Anyway, Sanchean would like to reopen diplomatic channels with KoL. Just to change things and shake them up.

Still a bit rusty, so no RP, but we would like to sound out a possible tech cooperation and RP trade.

(How about a joint scientific venture with our research ships?)

Galactic Fringe World Committee (GFWC) Convention

Fringe World Committee

Aim: To improve security and relations with all worlds on the fringe. By doing this it is expected that the region as a whole will become much safer and as peaceful practices such as trade will increase dramatically.

Outline: (Newly amended version)

- The committee will meet every six months.

- Every three years a new committee president will be chosen from member delegates.

- The role, responsiblities and powers of the committee president are as follows,
* Organise committee activities, such as general meetings, investigations and trade forums
* Act as speaker for any committee meetings
* Holds the veto vote in committee decisions that can be used against all but an unanimous vote against the wishes of the committee president
* Acts as commander-in-chief for the security council and is hence responsible for all security council actions
* Is able to appoint members to specific committee roles such as treasurer

- Members do not have to contribute any military forces to the committee however, they will have to allow any forces of another member free passage through their area of influence and rights to dock for supplies. Member planets may charge the foreign planet a fair price for the supplies however.

- Military alliances will only be discussed once the committee is in place, but it is expected that such alliances will not be used against other committee members. To enforce this, a security council is to be setup consisting of any planets wishing to contribute military forces to the committee for routing out pirates and so forth.

- In order to improve the effectiveness of the security council and the committee in it's effort to secure the fringe, a nominal membership fee will be required of all members based on total planet income (i.e a percentage).

- Members are to remain at peace with one another and use the committee to discuss disputes openly. Members currently at war will be expected to set aside their differences and broker peace.

- The committee is to remain neutral in conflicts between committee members and non-committee league members unless special circumstances arise. However, any league member world openly declaring a state of hostilities with a committee member will be subject to automatic trade sanctions by the committee until that state of hostiliy has ceased. Once again, this may be excepted under special circumstances.

- The committee will not support acts of aggression against fellow members and such actions can get you thrown out of the league.

- It is hoped that a new arms trade can be established. Those with the building facilities should be able to sell or hire out ships and weapons to newer, resource-rich fringe communities to help deal with the pirate threat.

- To support the war against the pirates, all committee members will be expected to divulge any information relating to pirates to the committee however, committee approval is NOT needed for actions against pirates.

- It should be noted that it is expected of members to still follow league decisions however, if a member disagrees with a decision made by the league or thinks it is begin treated unfairly they may come to the committee and we will try to sort something out with the league. If that fails and we think the league is incorrect in it's actions we will act independantly of the league and see what can be done.

Developments
- The representive for New Boston stormed out
- The represntive of New Berlin is waiting around being non-committal ((they want to see which way Freiland and Cienelle go))
- The representive of The Republic of Altan decides that the terms are satisfactory and agrees to join.
- Thre representive of The Republic of Barak states that it is leaning toward joining, but wishes to take a while longer to consider the revised terms.
- The representive of The Kingdom of Neuilly agrees to the revised terms and will join.
- The representive of New London agrees to the new terms and will join, though it reserves the right to leave the committee at any time it pleases.
- The representive of Earth has offered three military technologies and possible 'lenient' offers for final silicon computers to any fringe world upon joining this organisation
- As of yet, the expected food fight has yet to be initiated

Re: Planet Wars: Redux

Geological nitpicking

Ok, as my course progresses and I begin to gain a greater and greater understanding of geological processes some things which seemed accurate eariler now seem glaringly incorrect. As such since my mind is presently still in 'geo' mode and not RP mode yet, I figured I would go over the basic planet descriptions and perhaps point out how each type should look if this was the real world... yeah, I know who cares right? Well I can't help it, it's just one of those verbal diarrhoea moments that I have to direct somewhere.

[puts on geo hat]

Planet Types:

Barren World - Barren World-Dry and lifeless, though not necessarily hot. Barren worlds are good for just about nothing, as the surface is flat and indistinctive, lacking rocks and therefore minerals. Barren worlds are often product of a catastrophic natural disaster. Barren worlds frequently lack any atmosphere.

By this definition, a barren world have to have been completely glassed on the surface, there is no other way there could be no 'rocks'. In a sense then geologically speaking, a barren world should be rather described as a planet with a crust and mantle poor in heavy elements and rich in lighter silica-saturated rocks whilst being poor in elements such as iron and magnesium. Possibly, the only plausible way a barren type planet can form naturally is if geological processes ceased abruptly after a duration of gravity settling which is highly unlikely.

Arctic World-Very cold, very wet, though all surface water is frozen as ice or snow. ice worlds can easily support life, though sometimes suffer because people don't like living there. Ice worlds are difficult to mine as surface rocks are covered in snow, and lack raw materials.

Ok, no major issues here except if most of all surface water is frozen would not the environment be very dry?

Rock World - A planet the surface of which is composed almost entirely of rock. Rock worlds are reasonably inhospitable to humans, as there is little opportunity for food, though naturally they are abundant in raw materials.

Ok firstly an abundance of 'rocks' does not mean an abundance in useful minerals. In essence, I believe the description should be that the surface is rich in heavier minerals such as iron and magnesium and this is possible geologically if the planet was 'whacked' early in it's formation to remove the lighter elements by removing the silica-rich crust and mantle. As such MERCURY SHOULD BE A ROCK WORLD DAMN IT (). In the case of Teian Point which is also abundant in semi-rare ores there would've had to have been some form of hydrological processes at some stage to concentrate these ores.

Earth World - A planet similar to Earth. Very hospitable to humans, consisting of around 2/3 surface water and 1/3 surface land. The land is invariably covered in fauna of some description.

'Invariably' covered? They have large animal colonies in the gobi desert and Antartica nowadays eh?

Mars World - A planet similar in properties to Mars of the Sol system. The world's surface is halfway between desert and rocky, with massive mountain range stretching across parts of it, and seemingly endless deserts in others. The atmosphere is thin and the planet cold and lifeless. Storms and other unusual weather types make this planet extremely inhospitable, however, the blend of rock and desert makes construction and mining very easy.

Pretty accurate, could possibly mention a formation history similar to earth-types yet lacking the magnetic field required to hold in a hospitable atmosphere due to the core cooling and solidifing.

Jungle World - Similar to Earth worlds, except hotter and more humid, giving way to more fauna and a rainforest-type environment. Usually they are reasonably hospitable towards humans.

No problems here. Earth during the Mesozoic.

Ocean World - The surface consists entirely of water and ocean. Ocean Worlds are usually abundant in native life, and thus food and water is not a problem. The main problems come from building and mining raw materials.

Plausable, though I'm not sure how....

Volcanic World - Usually young planets, these are covered in volcanoes and are rich in geological activity. They are highly inhospitable to humans, as the gasses from these eruptions poison the atmosphere, but the volcanic and geological activity presents unique opportunities in mining.

I'd agree with that since being young the mantle and lower crust would be more enriched in heavier elements such as iron, magnesium, titanium etc, as well as rare earth elements.

Desert World - Hot and dry, inhospitable to humans because of lack fo water. However, desert worlds often contain a reasonable concentration of raw materials.

No problems here. Earth in the future You could even possibly have a large number of titanium deposits if the world was once an ocean world since titanium sands (heavy sands or 'Rutile') form and are concentrated by long ongoing ocean processes (Possible commodity 'Hint' 'hint' 'hint').

Gas World - A planet composed entirely of gas, like Jupiter. Some speculation indicates that the gas may condense to liquid toward the core, but as of yet no craft can withstand the pressure to see. Gas worlds are difficult to build on as everything has to be orbital, but high concentration of gas is a boon to raw materials.

If you're talking about hydrogen, helium and other light gases as a fuel source then yeah, that's fine. No heavy elements of course.

Swamp World - Similar to Earth worlds, but wetter and slightly warmer. Swamp worlds are less hospitable to humans as they yield less food and are hard to build on and move through.

Yep. Earth during the Carboniferous.

[takes off geo hat]

Wow... I need to get a life
