Re: Robin Cook has died
That's not a good thing, as he was one of the few labour type chaps to stand up to Blair.

Re: Robin Cook has died
I was going to post more or less what Mark just said.
He was one of the few Labour MPs who's word counted for something with me. I know he was far from trusty in his personal life at times, but frankly that has little reflection on politics. I think parliament and the rest of us will miss a man who valued his principles over "toeing the party line".

Robin Cook was an ugly ginger freak. The gene pool has improved.

Re: Robin Cook has died
I agree that he's a loss because he stood up for what he believed in even when it disagreed with the party. He also was willing to take a step down, and end his cabinet career (which most politicians strive for immensely) to make his point.
Sadly, with the way the British politics (especially the labour party) works, he'll no doubt be replaced with yet another mindless automaton who says whatever his/her party says without even thinking it through. We have way too many of those at the moment.

Re: Robin Cook has died
His integrity (and my respect for him) soared first when he became Leader of the House of Commons, and then when he stepped down over the Iraq war. He supported a largely elected House of Lords, thank god, going against Blair in doing so. When he resigned, I disagreed with him but was full of admiration for the manner in which he did so.

Re: Robin Cook has died
I disagree with a fully elected house of commons though, I think that it is a folly because without being fully elected, it has longer term attention, and is less susceptible to short term 'trends' that would be regretted later. It also doesn't care for popularity when not fully elected, so will make 'necessary' decisions that might not be popular. Still though, despite supporting that, he was a decent politician.

I don't agree with a fully elected Lords either (I assume that's what you meant), I would prefer it to be 50-50. Only the elected members (and the current members, phased out by the passage of time) would be allowed to take a party whip, and the appointed members would be cross-benchers.
However, this is off-topic, let's get this thread back on track.

Re: Robin Cook has died
The best prime minister the country never had. It was a real shame cook was kicked out of the foreign office and replaced with straw, who I think is frankly rather crap.

A useless faggot who got a conscience far too late in the day.
"Greatest parliamentarian of his generation" truly is damning with faint praise (if it's even true).

Re: Robin Cook has died
I really wasn't expecting to hear this. I can only assume the universe got bored and Robin Cook was the unfortunate victim of an almightly game of pin the tail on the donkey, metaphorically speaking.
At least he died in Scotland, being as I quite like Scotland. And he was with his wife. Bye Robin.
