Sorry if you opened the thread assuming that this would be something about how wrong it is for the elderly to go on holidays. You should have used the mouseover t hing.

I'm applying to IBM. Having recieved an e-mail saying how my application had been successful, I had to do an aptitude test (on Wednesday or so). Fairly basic maths - sequences, matrices of data we had to evaluate, and general "if you had a 20x10 room and another 50 squared metres outside, and it cost £20/metre squared, how much would it cost to carpet it all with 10% extra spare" questions.

I think I did ok. I had a week to complete it, and I started (and completed it) in like, an hour. So, today I got an e-mail saying "please select a time you want to come see us. be warned there's only a limited number of places on each date" etc etc. So, I went and looked. The only available time is Thursday next week (24th), at 9.30. In Winchester (I'm in York). For those that don't know, it's probably a 5 hour journey by train... no way I'm driving it. Luckily, my girlfriend is at uni there, and my expenses are paid, so I can go see her either side of the application.

But, is it fair that (seeing as I have to be there Wednesday, no way I can leave and get there in time Thursday) they suddenly drop one and only one possible appointment in my lap and give me 5 days to sort it all out? I don't think so but I've not really done this before much. I did write a small e-mail to them saying "ok, I've taken the slot but will it be like this all the time?" I'm sure that it didn't do my application any good, but nevermind. They are paying my expenses, so to that at least. I guess they want to see how much you're willing to do for them.
Am I wrong?

when I had my assessment day for my job they paid me to stay in a 4* hotel for the night.
Which was very reasonable.

Email them saying "As I live in York I will require overnight accommodation in WInchester so can you recommend me a hotel in the area?
Also will I be able to claim it on expenses?"

That's what I did.

I thought it was about sleeping with grannies and what ste said...they are generally quite accomodating remember they want you too. Also it shows initiative I guess, your not too scared to speak your mind, rather voice your opinions and all that other bullshit that management speak makes you say.
