Being Organised (and Personal Organisers)
OK, I'm shit at organising things. Always have been. It's partially because while my long-term memory for trivia is fairly good, my short-term memory for mundane things is abysmal. This leads to forgetting where I left my keys, losing things all the time, etc. More importantly it also means I never get projects started/finished on time, and my life often becomes a mess.
Two questions :
1. Can anyone recommend a personal organiser (you know, like a handheld jobby) which doesn't cost a lot of money? I want to be able to set reminders, make appointments, make notes, etc. Something beyond the mere facilities you get on a mobile phone basically. Doesn't need to be too fancy, I don't need fully-fledged versions of Word/Excel like you get on some of these iPaq (?) things and shit.
2. Anyone got any suggestions on how to be more organised? As this is GD I expect plenty of "When I want to remember I tie a knot in my penis" style hilarity. But really, any tips?

You should carry around a handheld tape recorder. e.g.:
"Captain's log, time 0900 hours, date zero one slash zero four slash 2004. Note to self, must remember to pick up a tin of sweetcorn on the way home tonight."

Re: Being Organised (and Personal Organisers)
not really, the one thing i can say is i had always promised myself that i would never have a diary, but i have had to have one for the past 2 years of work to keep track of all the meetings/training courses/overtime/etc that i have done in addition to my normal work.
other than that, i also have lots of little bits of paper scattered about my bedroom with little notes to myself on

If I'm a slacker, explain how I do so little work.

Re: Being Organised (and Personal Organisers)
I've got an iPaq, it's twice saved me from no handing in Assignments, and several times reminded me to actually go to work, and, best of all, it reminded me to go and buy my girlfriend a birthday present.

Re: Being Organised (and Personal Organisers)
The key to bein organised is planning (or is that obvious!?)
At the start of the week, sit down for 10 mins, see what needs to be done that week, see when you can do them etc. This way you'll know a lot earlier what if you have free time/not enough time.

Re: Being Organised (and Personal Organisers)
im terribly disorganised too.
last 72 hours ive had about 10 hours sleep inclusive because ive been rushing to finish my work before the deadlines.
got it done though, almost.
i always got help from people re: organisation at school. It mostly boiled down to giving me MORE books to write stuff down in. I also had a personal organizer for a while, but that just turned into another non-work distraction.
i am better now than i was though, mainly because i write some stuff down now and again.

Re: Being Organised (and Personal Organisers)

Yeah, that's genius but I'm not sure that line will work when my creditors smash down my front door with a sledge hammer.

To be fair, if creditors smash down the door they are probably there to see me.
Anyhow, organisation is shit. It removes all the surprises from life!

No, that'll be the police. Your creditors will just garnish your wages and/or repossess their property.
With respect to organizers, I like the idea of adaptive software which learns from your procrastination techniques and adjusts priorities accordingly. Something like Life Balance, on which I've seen some favorable reviews.
I'm not quite organized enough to Get Organized myself though. :/

Well, it depends. The organisation I work for are the ones who smash down people's doors, but it's our property so that's a little different. Obviously we need court baliffs there though.
It'll be a moot point though when the loan sharks come round
Thanks for the link though, will check it out. I'm writing my own organising thingie at the moment, so I'll try stealing* their best ideas.
