Okay, I've installed this Shadow's Experimental and it seems a bit crappy. There's a separate window for each download which is not good, plus it doesn't seem that easy to customize. At this rate I'll be reinstalling BT++!

I'll give it a chance anyway. Any other good ones out there?

I don't really understand the whole bittorrent thing myself. I understand that if you are trying to grab a file it connects to other users with the file and uses them to accelerate it and vice versa. However it only works with bittorrent servers which is the thing I don't get, how are you supposed to find servers with the file you are after so far I've only seen a few sites of any use that support it making it something of a specialist tool to me!?

BT works like this:
  • Someone has a file. He also hes a server. He generates the "tracker"-file, which you will later download (some kb only).
  • This file contains stuff like the tracker-server-IP, additional IPs, what the file is about maybe, and a checksum.
  • You download it from SuprNova or wherever, your client reserves disk space, and connects to the tracker. The tracker knows who else is online atm, and what parts those people have downloaded. It will also tell other people YOUR IP, and how much you have downloaded.
  • Your client connects the IPs it's been told, and you get the data you want. At the same time, you're sending stuff you already have to someone else.

Obviously, this leads to some problems:
  • Once a tracker-server changes, or goes offline, your torrent-file becomes useless
  • Generally, without a tracker, no download
  • The tracker needs to do the "balancing", i.e. whose parts get redistributed to which users etc, some algorithm stuff whatever, I sometimes doubt it's really "fair"


And, finally, what about good clients? Well:
  • The standard client only has one simultaneous download, which is uncomfortable. It also has no bandwidth control. So, good clients:
  • You can download / manage more than one file at once
  • You can (to some extent) manage up- and downstream
  • Nice & informative status messages + labels...
  • Better design, more comfortable to use...
Basically things you would expect to be standard.

Limiting your upspeed is a "bad" idea for the whole BT-concept though, as "not sharing" is a general problem. Additionally, simultaneous downloads un-balance the whole network more and more. Think about ADSL, more downstream than upstream, can't really work "equally"...

Big shame though the simple standard shitty client has a "self-disabling upstream-feature", it uses so much traffic, that even your downstream can't work 100%. And checking eMails or so is almost impossible, with having 20 bytes / sec left...

I still use the offical client.
It has supported multiple downloads for months btw.

As for bandwidth, I have a program called NetLimiter which allows me to control bandwidth (up and down) for the whole system, a particular program, a single connection to a program (ie. a particular upload on Kazaa) or combinations of these.
I just limit my p2p clients to a maximum that's about 5k/sec slower than the cable connection can upload.

The obvious benefit there is that it works with BT, Kazaa, DC...

Without an upload limit my upload would be constantly maxed out and thus causing packet loss etc and causing my download speed to come to a standstill.

As for people not sharing, you just have to find a community/forum that's not full of a bunch of idiots.

I finished a download a few days ago but have jumped back on to seed it when some people asked. If everyone thinks the same way it works.

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ is the client thats my fav, admittedly I dont use BT much as I dont like the network much (I just leave it uploading and rarely download anything)

Press 'resume' after pausing it.

Or

Load the torrent file again and point it to the incomplete files.

So I go back to suprnova (or wherever), click on the link and tell it to download it to the same place I told it to download to before? Okay, I'll give that a go when I'm on my computer.
