I need a suit
Ok, I've managed so far in my life without a suit, i've survived with shirt and tie, or borrowing of a friend.
But now i realised i really should get one seeing as i finish uni this year.
I don't want to spend too much money as I'm not sure how often i'm gonna wear it and i'm a poor student type still.
So, I need: Jacket, Shirt, Trousers, Shoes.
Where is a good place to get them from?
How much will it cost me?
How long will it last me?
Thanks guys.

Re: I need a suit
you are looking at at least £100 for a cheap suit, and that is just jacket and trousers (from somewhere like burton menswear) plus another £20 for a shirt and tie set
for anything decent, have a look around, but plan on paying probably around three times as much,
although, if your a student type, with the amount of times you will be wearing it, a cheap suit will still probably see you right for a fair while (couple of years ish)
EDIT: after reading theams post, i saw a hugo boss suit in TK Maxx last year for £80 it didn't fit me though

Re: I need a suit
yeh Burton, Next or Topman were the kind of places I was thinking...
But are they any good from those places? Or would a specialist suit shop be better?
£200 would probably be the most i could justify spending and that includes shoes as well.
I know you get what you pay for, but is it worth it to me spending more much more than that?

Re: I need a suit
Slater mensware do decent suits at reasonable prices. Theyre doted about the country.
http://www.slatermenswear.com/content/
they are much better than most places and will even make alterations. plus you get a 'personal shopper' type dude who helps you find what your looking for and tells you if it fits properly. i highly recommend them. the service is second to none whenever ive been in.
If your looking for designer off the peg ive heard through the grape vine that hugo boss arnt made as well as they should be. Armani is the 'label to have'
however for 500 quid you get just get one tailored.
if your looking for cost++++ go for brioni. they are rather nice looking http://www.brioni.it/

Re: I need a suit
oh and slaters is also very very reasonably priced. my first suit ever was from there and cost just over 100 pounds or something and was italian and made well.
they also have the 'bronze/silver/gold' rooms for when yuou want to spend more.

Re: I need a suit
I've only had good experiences with Slaters, as JammyJim mentioned. While they have many assistants out to help you get the right size and everything (and to help you find what you are after, as they have enormous amounts of stuff) they are not on commission acording to their brochure, so they wont point you at the most expensive one just to get themselves more money. They have on site alterations so if you just need the trousers turning upo a little it gets done, rather than waiting till the next time you visit your mum. They also have good prices cause they use first floor spaces rather than ground floor so they get loads of room cheaply and dont have high overheads.
Theyre great if youre an odd size too. One of the few places that does trousers long enough for Mark.

That offer's back on, I picked up the same for £160 on Friday. Got shit shoes just because it was part of the deal and they wouldn't let me not have shoes, but it's a nice suit.

Yeah, go to those kind of places. That's where I got mine from - they're good for students.

I'd imagine for a while, they seemed to not know how to enter it into the till when I went so I can only assume it's a new one.

Re: I need a suit
Mine cost 120 Euros at C&A. That included trousers, jacket, shirt and tie. Nice quality too.
Shoes are a different story. I hopped into the "Schoenenreus" and bought me a pair of shoes. They were nearly as expensive as the suit.

Re: I need a suit
I got a cheapish suit from next - the jacket, trousers and shoes. I already had a few shirts and ties.
It was nothing amazing but I had job interviews for my year in industry placement, so even as I was a scruffy student I thought I should probably make the effort.
It must have done the trick, because on my 3rd interview I was offered the job on the same day, before I'd even heard back from the other two - and I know I was up against 8 other candidates from my course alone. Personally, I think technically I'm not as good as some of them, but the interesting thing is that some of the particularly smart ones (academically speaking) hadn't made much effort with thier appearance.
Go go gadget Next suit I say!

You cant go wrong with Burtons. Mine was just over £100 including a shirt and tie i think and its 3 or so years old now worn every couple of months without any problems.

Re: I need a suit
I've had a couple of suite from cheap places - from Topman and somewhere else (I forget). I do intend however on being two more suits in time for when I start work. I was going to buy a Boss one, but JJ has made me think again
How much will an Armani one set me back?

IIT JJ wins prize for best advice.
Bought a suit from slaters recently for a wedding, £150 for jacket and trousers, extra £25 for the shirt and tie. Hands down cheapest and best place to buy quality apparel.

job interviews and the like. If I'm going into engineering (still deciding) then I could do with one for doing presentations and impressing people.
Also have my grandpa's stone setting in June.
Possibly a wedding in July.
And general looking smart stuff.

Re: I need a suit
well, there's one in Nottingham so I'll go there when I'm back.
Just means waiting a couple of weeks.
Also means walking through Nottingham with a suit... guess I should drive rather than take the bus...
Do you reckon I should check out Burtons etc anyway? I really don't know what I'm looking for...

Re: I need a suit
Go to Slaters in Birmingham and spend more for a better suit that will last you ALOT longer.
I'm 18 and I own 1 grey suit, 1 black suit full Dinner dress (DJ, self tie bow tie) and a white evening jacket!
expensive being a musician
Don't ask how much it totals, I dont like to think about it heh

let's be honest.
this whole thread is going to be full of nonsense isn't it.
the point is, shoes??? you have them. shirts???? you have them.
you need a suit. a single breasted jacket and matching trousers. the key is to identify what you need then determine how much you can spend on what you need.

Burtons for a couple of hundred, maybe as low as 150. While not expensively tailored they are decent enough suits and will last a long time if you don'T wear them much. decent enough for interviews and things. brand at this stage is irrelevant I feel, so don'T pay 300 quid for a name.

Re: I need a suit
It depends on your build alot Ste, if your average weight, average height, average shoulder size, chances are you can pick up a suite off-the-rack and it will look fine. I'm sure with some shopping around you could get a suit made, or atleast changed to fit your build for around ?300. There an investment, you spend the money now and you'll be wearing them for years.

I went to Slaters and bought a suit
A dark blue suit, a light blue shirt and tie, nice shoes, cufflinks and a bag all for £156 not bad at all.
Pos rep to all that suggested them!

Slaters
As a couple have said, this is the place to go, I got mine from there, cost me about £200 for a decent suit, shirt, tie and shoes. It is a great place to go, it is very good value, the staff are extremely good and helpful, and you can walk in there without a clue and walk out with something very good and useful.

Re: I need a suit
Oh, also, another major advantage with Slaters is that they do free adjustments on suits, i.e. if it doesn't fit, they'll adjust it to make it fit for free, and they are willing to do it in a timespan that suits you if they can.
