I had my fleet out defending, yes.
That's why it isnt so 'bad'.
I lost roids, yes - I lost score, yes.
But I saved a great friend of mine and that was worth the roids & score.
And I slept 10h, which was also very nice

It's worth mentioning though that:
1. You sent defence to your friend when he had no hostiles.
2. He indeed got attacked that night - 1.4k cath ships launched on him. And even without you, there was loads of defence sent, like more than hundred k.

I took between 15-20 mill off mundo who was in an Eclipse/ToT galaxy.
Admittingly at the time the galaxy could have sent defence (assuming they send on eta 6 to land at the same time) mundo got closed so they couldn't, but still.

Those massive fleets arent aimed at killing
Just noone sends only pods because as you know roids are divided among attackers depending on how much they sent - so everyone tries to send "a bit" more than just pods aiming to cap more.
As a result cap is around 1-2%
