Vista SP 1
Is it worth it?
I do not have the internet so security is not a problem and I do enjoy having the most up-to-date version of software (if it's free). But I'm not going to bother getting it if it makes my PC more secure but runs at a slower speed.
Should I bother?

Re: Vista SP 1
I'm still using XP. I've had no worries with it really, so i dont really see any urgency towards 'upgrading' to Vista. Plus, i've heard so many mixed reviews on vista its a little unsettling.
But if you've vista already, and are considering whether to 'upgrade' to SP 1, then I wouldnt have a clue as i know little about either.

Re: Vista SP 1
SP 1 is not the same type as SP 2 for XP was, which had all kinds of additional features. It's just a cumulative batch of windows updates since Vista came out. Most of these updates deal with security flaws, but some are bug fixes. The SP won't noticably slow your PC. In fact, I'd guess that setting up a new Vista installation and adding SP 1 is probably a better choice than installing all the updates individually.
Overall, I see no reason not to get SP1.

Re: Vista SP 1
Overall I see no reason to get Vista. Xp is still far ahead in performance, and I haven't seen any features on vista that makes it worthwhile yet.

Re: Vista SP 1
It was my impression that the topic was about installing SP 1, yes or no, not whether to pick Vista at all.
If the latter is the question being asked, then I'm going to concur with the above posters. Stick with XP.

Re: Vista SP 1
yes , SP1 is worth it, it fixes some file copying issues and (hopefully) the issue vista sometimes has with codecs

Re: Vista SP 1
do the obvious full backup of things just incase etc. The first time sp1 was released it caused some machines to go into an infinite reboot loop before it was pulled from the update site.

You can probably order it on disk for either free + postage or a nominal fee. Also odds are that pc magazines may end up putting it on their cover dvds assuming microsoft arent anal about how it can be distributed

Both good suggestions and A+ for effort!
I was planning to download it in uni and copy it to a USB stick or burn it to a DVD, depending on size.
