HECTOR THE RECTOR SECTOR
What are Edinburgh's students thinking? After the outpouring of emotion that swept the country following last year's announcement of Baroness Thatcher's retirement from public speechmaking, the milk snatcher has been invited to stand for the rectorship of Edinburgh University.
Also in the frame are veteran Labour campaigner Tam Dalyell, journalist Kate Adie, actor Robbie Coltrane and cat-loving Conservative novelist Anne Widdecombe. But fears have been raised that the selection of the Baroness as a contender reflects a growing trend amongst politically disengaged students for choosing 'comedy' figures over more heavyweight options.
The last 150 years have seen the likes of WE Gladstone (1859), Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1914), Winston Churchill (1929), Sir Alexander Fleming (1951) and the famously long-haired redistributist socialite Gordon Brown (1973) assuming what was once a highly respected office.
In 1999 a blow was struck for radical politics at the university when students overwhelmingly elected Robin Harper's scarf as their rector, but it has now completed its term in office.
