Beyond the known, the next galaxy
4358: Humankind is prospering, it recently made contact with 1 of the first alien races, known only as the eldar. The Eldar are a mysterious and secretive race, they refused to let any humans aboard their exploration vessel and their ambassadors where protected by some kind of energy field.
4478: Slipstream drives tested for the first time, a small batch of apparently ancient Eldar equipment was found and testing revealed it was all way more powerfull then any human technology was and is, attempts at replicating the technology failed.
4511: The Eldar have agreed to allow some humans aboard their ships, in addition they have, in small amounts, given some of their old components away. Scientist are in awe when the results of scans are analyzed, for the Eldar ships where not only unexplainably fast, they now proved to be resilient and have enough firepower to destroy a small planet.
4513: Analyzing of the Eldar FTL drive produces the wormhole/singularity drive, capable of opening a wormhole from 1 place to another, more Eldar equipment is donated to humankind and research continues
4514: With the help of Eldar technology, Nano-technology finally matures, ship construction becomes a matter of days instead of years and thousands of new ships are built in a matter of months.
4517: bioship cloning is first used, 2 bioships where succesfully grown, all systems in place, in the span of 2 months, several large cooperations switch to bioships.
4524: Massive construction project started, reason, classified, location, deep space near Alpha Proxima. Several starnavy battleships protect the site from unwanted attention.
4528: Massive energyspike detected near Alpha Proxima, the star almost immediatly goes critical and goes supernova 2 days later... The classified project and its inventors are naturally blamed, the starnavy attempts to subdue the rumors about a galactic travelling method
4567: The starnavy makes a second attempt at their secret project, this time several lightyears out from the nearest planet, 2 days before it finishes construction 2 terrorist corvettes manage to get past the perimeter and severely damage the construct, the resulting publicity forces the Starnavy to announce what they had been building... They call it the Galaxy Gate.
4568: The Galaxy Gate is completed, 2 massive rings within eachother, the outer ring is the remaining ring, it will serve as the portal from this side. The inner ring is sent to the target galaxy via a massive wormhole, when it arrives, the 2 rings connect and create a permanent wormhole.
4568, 12 days after the GG is completed: First testing was succesfull, the GG ring is sent across the wormhole and it connects, but only long enough to allow the prefab station, 5 colony ships and a small military escort through before the wormhole collapses, almost destroying the remaining ring.
4568, 2 months after the GG is completed: several days ago, the ring has been repaired and you've been selected to go through along with another 4 colony ships and a group of military escorts
Now: You safely arrived across the gate, but found out that it can only be used for a short before needing to recharge, signal is sent back across a micro wormhole communication system that was aboard 1 of the colony ships and is now installed on the station, dubbed station 0. Soon exploration of this new galaxy will begin in ernest, because though the first colony ships quickly found suitable planets, now a new galaxy needs exploring.
You may all design your own ship(s) from the parts found on my website: www.angeltowns2.com/members/flapjack/space.xls
and an example design at http://www.angeltowns2.com/members/f.../spaceship.txt for those of you that haven't quite managed to understand how it works (yet)
You will each have 50000 credits for your design.
Now, post your ships so I can scold, err, applaud you and when a couple of people have posted their ships, I'll post the missions

Whoa.
Exactly how long did it take to write up that spreadsheet!?
Oh and you'll need to explain what the front, sides and aft slots are for (Weapon placement?)

then you should either get Openoffice, which has the same functionality as m$ office but it's free.
You can either google for it or I'll PM it over.
Or you can go to Micro$oft's website and download the excel reader.
Openoffice is a large download tough

it took me 10 minutes to get the settings right.
It took me about 8 hours of writing to write all of the other stuff.
the front, sides and aft mounts are precisely that.
You can only have a set amount of weapons pointing in each direction (front/left/right/aft) and the total can obviously not exceed the weapon mounts for the hull you're using.
Simple as that no?
oh and on a sidenote, Heiro, your ship is using 1 additional mount to much....

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
So it's like the max weapons for each section with an absolute max for weapons stated in the weapons column right?

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
I worked on the principle that: You can have max weapons == to the weapon column, but no more than the number of mounts on each section. I.e I can have 12 weapon mounts, but only 4 on the sides...

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
Heiro, can you do maths? In that case, do 500*100 and tell me how much damage Hewitt can do in 1 turn with those 2 PD rocket pods before they're empty.
Now tell me if you still think you'll attack from the sides....

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
in fact, geocities decided to delete my account.... said I was it to store local files for backup....
perhaps they didn't see the amount of visits that 1 file got me.....
so now I've already regged with a different provider (50mb space, unlimited bandwith, no ads (max file size of 900kb)) and I'll be uploading the files there in a few minutes, new URLs will be edited into the start post
done, new URLs posted in first post, new server up and running, at least for the next 30 days :P

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
Ship: Light Carrier
Ship name: The Gauntlet
Shields: 2x Particle shields- 5000
Engines: Transwarp drive- 5000
Impulse drive- 2000
Weapons: 3x Quad light massdriver turrets (one for each side)- 1200
6x gattling lasers (2 for each side)- 7500

The only things that are probably wrong are the troops, fighters, and weapons, those present the only problems. Everything else should be fine, oh godly Dm.
History will be later, like a day or two, instead of a minute or two like this post was.

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
disrupter: let's see, you have 2 shield mounts. Yet you somehow manage to install 2 particle shields (2 mounts each), so you'll either have to get 2 shield pods (and remove or downgrade some of that stealth equipment) or drop 1 of the shields.
both your weapons would indicate there is 1 side open, I'll assume you won't have placed any weapons with the main facing aft since you have plenty of weapons firing that way anyways (this is thus not a problem)
You however have 6 weapon mounts to fill and you have filled 18 weapon mounts, that means 2/3rd of your weapons will have to be removed (look at the example ship for an example)
Your fighters are perfectly in order.
And your troops are perfectly in order.
please solve the above problems...

The Story... So Far:
The Shroud has been around for a while- or rather, it's predecessor...
Years ago a pirate prowled the spaceways under the command of Captain Quentin Smythe. Captain Smythe commanded a Destroyer- The Mephistopheles, that he put to good use, making quite a terror of himself. Hunted, but never caught, until fate ran into him, with the bill.
Fate took the form of Jonas Strom, originally a waster kid from a backwater colony, with nowhere to go and nowhere to run. Jonas was offered a life of Promise and Adventure by Smythe- if only he'd agree to serve as runner and cabin boy first.
Jonas knew this was the only chance he'd ever get at leaving- so he took it.
Over the years he learned all he could from Smythe, while staying in the background for the longest time. When he finally was ordered along on the raids, he at first revelled in them- until he had to kill his first innocent.
After the first, more followed soon. This disgusted him more and more, until he could stand it no longer. He had to talk about it, and so he did- to the female techrat, Link. He learned that Link shared his loathing and his lack of options. They soon became fast friends, and later even lovers.
The next few weeks proved... Educational. They learned of a few of Smythe's stashes and weapons caches, and several planned raids to boot. Armed with this knowledge, and a few choice pieces of Smythe's valuables, they fled.
They joined forces with a group of Bounty hunters: Legion.
ooc/Non-PA; I just like the name /ooc
Legion took them in, mostly because of the information they carried, and the spunk that got them there. They were assigned to the Frigate Leader: The Shroud. The bounty hunters spent the next few years hunting and disassembling Smythe's empire of crime. It came to a head when Legion gathered all it's forces to take out Smythe's homebase. The ensueing battle was bloody, and left Jonas in command of the Shroud. Both fleets were wiped out. After the dust settled, Smythe was gone, and the Shroud was a virtual wreck. Jonas managed to get his ship home, and bought a new class of ship from the collected bounty, determined to rebuild Legion, together with Link.
What they didn't know was that Smythe wasn't dead...
Years later, the bill came for Jonas. By now, the new Shroud was fully grown and fully equipped, and a feared Bounty hunter ship; He and Link were married, and she'd bore him a son: Fate. Legion was also prospering again.
Then, when Fate was 17, without warning, the attack came- knocking at their front door: Cloaked ships appeared everywhere- including the Mephistopheles! Carnage erupted everywhere, and this time Legion was wiped out, base and all. Link was dead, and Jonas thought his son dead as well. Determined to kill Smythe once and for all, he rammed the Mephistopheles head on!
When Fate woke up, he saw only carnage everywhere. Mother and father dead, and almost all of the crew. The ship was all but destroyed. He patched what weapons he could, and kept the hull alive as long as he could, while limping to a friendly port, with just a handful of the original crew left.
When they finally made it, the poor ship's hull couldn't support them any longer, and died.
All Fate could do, was save it's BCPU- it's 'brain' if you will. With what remained of the ship, and what remained of his parents' wealth, he bought a new ship, where he installed The Shroud's BCPU. The first thing Fate did when Shroud came back online was vow that he'd get her a new hull, as soon as he could...
That, was four years ago. Since then, they have been doing odd jobs, cargo runs and courier missions to make ends meet, and get the Shroud back in one piece.
He never did get to find out if Smythe was now finally gone...
ooc/Sorry if I went overboard with the Pre-RP, but once I started writing I just couldn't stop... Just tell me if I need to cut the story down to size... /ooc

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
ok just to keep it simple, i shall remove the shield and drop the weapons to gatling lasers on all sides (1 each) i think that should do it, if not beat me with a stick until it satisfies you.

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
czar: good story, but rather weak ship, perhaps downize it to a light frigate to leave you with some more money to get weapons with.
Disrupter: that will be enough *lowers the stick and hides it behind his back again*

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
Depends: Q: Can I get the Biohull mod later, or do I need tot take it when first creating the ship?
And ehrm... I know the ship is not what it can be- but I tried to solve that in the storyline- now all I need to do is find jobs to earn more money- to finish the ship...

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
Czar: due to the complexity of transforming an entire ship from normal to bioship, no. However when buying a bioship conversion you can get your current ship disassembled entirely and then reassembled into the bioship, as if you where just adding the bioship to it (essentially, what they do is strip your ship and reuse it, then build a whole new bioship with exactly the things you had before, at the cost of 25000 credits for the conversion)

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
<ooc> didn't have time to post to much last post </ooc>
Ship Name: The stingray. it preferes Stinger.
My ship, a small attack scout reputed to be the fastest living thing around (bioship), was too begin with a smulgling ship that carried small things that the owner realy didn't want toloose. Although lacking shields (ooc didn't notice that while I was making it /ooc) it relays on it's extreeme speed to avoid annoying questions from the customs guards. When the Galaxy gate was made I just couldent resist to go on the greatest adventure I had been on ... ever and so droped the smugeling buisnes to be recruited for the project.

Hmmm... Do I go for the two balanced ships... Or the four obliterate pretty much anything they concentrate fire on.... Or the 20 or so cannon fodders with rockets and railguns

I prefer both There's no reason why you can't have a story with über characters/ships/etc. It just requires equally powerful bad-guys.

Bakan: your ship is approved.
Czar: Well, putting a cluster missile launcher in reverse isn't advised, but the ship is approved

Re: Beyond the known, the next galaxy
Lol- I take it cluster missiles aren't targettable then?
I thought that as they aim themselves at their target it doesn't matter from which end they're fired...
