Cults, sects & factions
Someone I know has recently become convinced that she has been sucked into a cult.
She's a student, not your typical University student, she goes to a course which is four hours a day, 5 days a week. There are very few people in this course, only about 6 students (including her), two full time teachers and one teacher who comes once a week. I won't bore you with the details of the course, it's basically learning to become a teacher in a discipline which teaches us how to use our bodies properly. ie sit properly, walk properly, blah, blah, etc... She's been going there for two years now, so quite a while.
Now this is all well and good. Thing is there is one teacher who comes once a week, let's call him Steve. Steve is a buddhist, he lived in Japan for many years and has really got into buddhism in a big way. Once a month people go round his house for the weekend and sit and meditate and stuff. You know, buddhist stuff.
This friend of mine believes that Steve has somehow got into her brain. Not just Steve, everyone on the course. He talks about how we should all be pacifist and submissive and how we shouldn't have any bad thoughts or anything. The people on this course seem to worship him and idealise him. One girl on the course (let's call her Moira) actually believes that her boyfriend is one of many incarnations of Steve. The scary thing is that when Moira told my friend this interesting fact she actually believed it and hasn't had the guts to tell anyone until now. My friend also often thinks she sees Steve in the faces of other people. She is also sure that Steve has hypnotised her before. She has also got up in the middle of the night to check her e-mails only to find that Steve had sent her an e-mail only 10 minutes or half an hour before.
I could go on with examples but this post has gone on long enough I think. I was just wondering if any of you had experience (first hand preferably ) of cults like these. Oh yeah, and if you feel like giving advice that's cool too

Informing the authorities might be a wise move.

And say what? That some bloke seems to be influencing a bunch of people in a bad way? I don't see how any proof could be found. Especially since the people involved (my friend excluded) don't seem like the type to cooperate with the police in this matter.

Re: Cults, sects & factions
Unless the hypnotism thing is true, how is this even remotely 'cultish'? She's met someone who has had a big influence on her intellectually, oh **** someone call the police! Have we reached the point where every group of people who expresses non-mainstream ideas is labelled a "cult"?

Re: Cults, sects & factions
The enbytree quoted nodrog there but deleted the text of his post so the quote box bit didn't show up due to something gay to do with the forums that changed a while back.
Note to karm: please change.

Re: Cults, sects & factions
tell the head of department that a teacher is hypnotising his students
add something like you think it is to make them all do nasty sexual things to him against their will to make them act a bit faster

Re: Cults, sects & factions
I think that steve is an icon of cultistic hegemonies.
he sounds cool, perhaps he should be a political advisor. the world would be a much nicer place that way.

Re: Cults, sects & factions
Why don't you go round (possibly with other people so you don't get hypnotised!!) and ask Steve what he has to say on the matter?

Not a bad idea. But then my friend might be imagining it all and I'll just look like a crazy man! People will start calling me Mulder.

Re: Cults, sects & factions
Well I wouldn't go in and say "YOU BRAINWASHING CNUT, I'M GONNA MESS YOU UP", but just say you're worried about your friend, or interest in his class, etc.
Or you could just go round and put a cap in his ass. Bitch betta recognise. And so on.

Why were they a cult though? Cos they made you believe in God and pray every Sunday?
Or did they do more sinister stuff like sacrifice goats and get you to give them all your money?

Re: Cults, sects & factions
Hyponotism doesn't work. I've been hyponotised. I was totally aware of what I was doing. I could have stopped at any time. Because people think you're hyponotised though, you can play along with it, using that as your excuse, should you do anything embarassing or stupid.
PS: I haven't read most of this thread, I just wanted to give my opinion on hypnotism as I saw it on Top Gear last night too, and it was a load of rubbish.

(also the fact that hypnotism doesnt have the effect of making you bark like a dog or whatever wacky shit you picked up from Paul McKenna does not mean that it doesnt 'work', simply that it 'works' in a way other than what you expected).

Sounds like the guy is a charalan and your girlfriend and her fellow students are guillible idiots. Learnign how to sit probperly for two years?
However, the fact that he is taking advantage of people does not make it a cult. As long as his costs are open and he is not using power manipulation or or placing his students in a position of emotional or spiritual dependence in order to extort funds, it is not a cult.
Sounds to me like the real problem hjere is with the student, not the teacher.
