It seems that doing some real research on a hush-hush topic lands you in jail. If there weren't anything to hide, why is it a crime? Why is that the ONE and only thing that is a crime to question?

It's genetic. Deep down we are all little facists who despise free speech on general principle. Ofc, after loosing the war we couldn't go on with our nice little dictatorship, so we baned the only thing that was save to ban to have at least some limitations to freedom of speech.
Given the right oportunities we will not hesitate to ban more stuff, like some religious groups based on 'fighting terrorism'. That was fun.
