How do you interpret this?

Your normal working hours are 34 per week, (Monday to Sunday) during peak times of business. You may also be required to work a minimum of additional hours.

Could mean during back to school season and Christmas season you get the 34 hours a week, and the other 7 months of the year you struggle to get 15 hours a week. With the potential for getting a few extra hours doing overnights, and such. Thats essentially what my part-time retail job is like

Seems to me like you will be always working 34 hours a weeks but may also have to work extra hours as needed during peak times of the year. Kinda like a part time job but working the maximum hours as a part-timer to keep you from getting full time benefits.

your normal working week is 34 hours, however, occationally, at the discretion of your manager, you may be asked to do more to cover sickness/events/after closing stock checks/vacancies etc

It depends on what they mean by 'may' and 'minimum'. They're either cunning little ****s trying to set ambigious statements that can be interpreted to their benefit or just stupid, if thats how its worded in the document that is. You can't really tell what you can and can't refuse from that.

If they're busy, you're going to get a sick number of hours, 34 plus and get shafted. If they're not busy you'll get no hours and get shafted. Most people seemed to miss the "during peak times of business" clause. It's not exactly clear though, do working hour contracts come with a definition of "minimum"?

From how i read it, this covers working for 12 hours a week (the 34 hours are during "peak times of business") just like it "may" cover working for 48 or 60 hours ("required" to work a "minimum" of "additional") as they prefer it. Im not sure if such a completely vague clause is legal wherever you life, but it certainly isnt in your favor

It's a rubbish clause whch valid or invalid doesn't really help the employee at all.

Basically if they see fit (e.g. it's quiet, or worse they want you out but can't find a way to sack you so want to 'persuade' you), they can nail your hours or book you in for hours of overtime.

Sounds to me like they've missed out a number before "additional hours" and someone botched the contract.

The "during peak times of business" part suggests to me thats just limiting the times you will work in the day ie if its an office job problem 9-5, if its retail probally more like 9-9. So your working for 34 hours split over the week however they see fit but not outside certain hours.

As others have said I think the additional hours thing probally required a number to be put in. Id assume if theres no number put in then it means you arent required to do any overtime but I would claifiy it with the employer if I was you

looks like the original version said something like
'required to work a minimum of 6 additional hours'

meaning that if they want they can make you work a full 40 hours a week, but you could refuse after that.

but that they later changed their mind and meant to say, simply, "you may be required to work additional hours".

In practice, if that is a contract that has been signed, the employer is ****ed because the actual meaning of that sentence is that they can require you to not work more than x hours past the 34, which isn't what they want at all.
