HAHA, never been spammed this way before
probably really old as i dont get much spam anymore
i opened a piece of spam this morning, just to see what it was, as it didn't have any of the usual words in the title, and the body of the message was full of the keywords that set of the filters, but, it was actually a .jpg of the page with all the writing on hehehe

Was there anyone else who thought this was about a can of spam when he read this line? Because I did.

Re: HAHA, never been spammed this way before
isn't the idea that the spammer will be able to look at server logs and realise that as that jpg has been 'hit', that your email account is active and so a good target for more spam?

Re: HAHA, never been spammed this way before
What SYMM and enby said.
To expand, they don't tend to email the jpeg, they just link to it in the code.
The link will include a trackback*, which informs the spammers that a client at your email address has loaded the image and thus it's a valid address. Which will then be sold to more spammers. Which brings more spam.
Today's moral: don't open spam, kids.
*How I would do it:
<img src="http://spam.server.com/tools/imgdisplay.php?imgid=4& [email protected] />
This allows a number of different spam mails to be sent with the same code (imgid determines which jpg to show) and includes a trackback so the server knows which email address caused the image to be loaded (target).
Easy money.

Re: HAHA, never been spammed this way before
yeah, it doesn't matter, its my 'everything that i sign up for goes to this account' account i only open it at work, where i dont care if i **** up the computers
(edit, i open probably one piece of spam a week, the more inventive stuff, and i am still at the moment only averaging about 10 pieces of spam a week, even though i have been doing this for months)

Re: HAHA, never been spammed this way before
i dont get what you people do.
I've had 2 major email accounts the past 4 years and never ever have either of them got spam. It just doesn't reach me.
and no, to the best of my knowledge theres been no anti-spam stuff in place at the time.

tempting.
but no
it's odd, i have the same thing with spyware and virus
i don't run a virus scanner or firewall hardly ever, and yet i -never- get a virus, and i -never- get spyware on the machine. I scan it to be sure every so often.
It's like my computer is invulnerable to the nasty bits of the internet.

same here... it's partly down to competence but also the magic ingredient of NOT USING IE

Re: HAHA, never been spammed this way before
to be fair, i do use IE on the laptop, but not on the desktop, but only cos i haven't gotten around to d/ling opera yet
(heh, my main workstation now also has opera, as for some reason (ie, its a big pile of shit) IE wont work anymore, so i got permission to add a different browser )

Or INTELLIGENT enough.
If they send just the mail with the image to be loaded (for identification purposes), it will probably be blocked. Who is stupid enough to let emails load stuff from the internet? Since the Outlook Express upgrade (and its standard setting to no) most noob users don't get external pictures in emails displayed anymore...
UNLESS they are included.
And then the whole "text on jpg" thing makes a bit more sense again.

It's even better if you associate each email with an id, or produce a hash or something. If someone hovers over the link and sees that his email is displayed in the status bar, that will make at least some people suspicious.
But essentially that is how it's done...
EDIT: Forgot that we're talking about pictures, and you don't see the link in the status bar -- so never mind...
