8GB Mobile Phone
It seems only a few months ago I can remember there being a lot of wow factor surrounding a phone with 64 mb. Now samsung have come up with an 8GB phone, the article talking about it can be found here
Im quite interested to see what you all think about the possibilites of mobile phones. Needless to say this phone is certainly interesting and im sure if no one else in the market can match it I envisage it will sell a ton (as all mobiles seem to be doing these days)

Re: 8GB Mobile Phone
Are they using the word 'harddrive' properly? Isnt it going to be a memory card/flash memory like most phones? They mentioned the nano there in comparasion which is flash, so I suspect the article writer is confused somewhere along the line.
If that phone is able to drive a good pair of headphones (which I doubt), then I'd seriously consider getting one instead of a dedicated mp3 player. However since most people dont seem to care whether their music sounds like shit, it will probably be able to challenge mp3 players regardless of its sound quality.
Aside from that, I'm not sure what the point is. Can you mount it as a removable harddrive? If so then itll be cool for portable storage, but my N70 makes you install shitloads of pointless software in order to transfer files back and forwards.

do you have any dead pixels on yours? within two weeks of getting mine i had a horizontal row about 1.5mm thick that stays white at all times when the power is on.
It sucks

No, if only from the first sentence. If they were using it properly, they'd describe it as the first, not the largest, so they're just referring to internal storage capacity.

Re: 8GB Mobile Phone
The press release ( http://www.samsung.com/PressCenter/P...306_0000237511) clearly says it has a hard drive. It also mentions it can be utilised as a removable hard disk and that usually means you can just drag&drop files (music) to the media. It supports a quite impressive number of music formats including AAC and OGG I just miss Mp3Pro, XM and FLAC
ps: i would prefer 2 GB of flash memory anytime over 8gb of hard disk storage. No matter how "impressive" they make their latest safety technology sound, if you drop your phone and it hits the ground at one edge while your hard disk is running, you can kiss your data and the drive goodbye

Re: 8GB Mobile Phone
It has a harddrive.
8GB of flash ram alone would cost around £500, never mind the phone. It would also be terribly terribly slow, and take up more physical room than a harddrive, and isn't too good on the power specs either.
Samsung, being a noteable manufacturer of harddrives including those in my PC, have undoubtedly built their own unit for this very application. The last I heard was that Toshiba had managed to get 4GB onto a 0.85" drive using PMR, with plans to get it up to 10GB.
1 inch drives are already over the 12GB mark, so assuming this is a 1 inch drive then it isn't really bleeding edge technology. The other thing people forget is that the smaller the drive is (physical size), the less power is needed to spin it up, and it doesn't need to spin as fast either as the higher storage density of PMR reduces seek times.

Re: 8GB Mobile Phone
Yes.
Instead of coating the platter surface with magnetic particles that lie flat, they are (by some magic or other) made to stand up vertically on the platter surface. This gives a fairly dramatic increase in density, hence more storage for the same physical space.

Flash prices dropped a lot lately, i just bought 2 gig for £45. A 8gig Compact Flash 1 card costs about £219 here. Certainly not cheap but affordable for the top range of customers.

Common flash memory does 18 to 20 MB/s which isnt that slow esp. in embedded devices where the apps/data usually arent huge. Flash is great on power specs and thats why many embedded devices prefer it over hard disks.
You can get 8Gig on compact flash 1 and that isnt really taking up much more physical room than a hard drive ( http://www.alternate.de/html/shop/pr...MDO38&#tecData)

Once again Flash memory "r0x0rs your b0x0rs" - for example Microsoft uses a technology in the upcoming Vista to use Flash memory for speeding up file access making use of the faster seek times.

Re: 8GB Mobile Phone
I'd love to get my hands on that baby, providing the battery life is any good, which is the most important question.
Unlike Green Spit, I'd prefer to have one device to make phonecalls on, listen to music, watch movies whilst journeying or browse the Internet, without having to tug along an entire bag of equipment. In fact, with my SPV C550 I pretty much already have that, but 512Mb storage vs 8Gb is obviously quite a noticeable difference.

That didn't fly off the shelf at CPW. It was that crap. My mate, who's an assistant manager at one London branch, told me so.
Some Samsungs are good, others are just wack.
