after watching everything i could think of my ranking goes like this:

1. star gate (Before i started watching i always t5hought it must suck, i mean, it has mc gyver in it and all, but now im conviced that its one of the best shows ever made.)

2. Babylon 5 ( Youve got to love this. good old good vs evil story, but not as flat and one-dimesional as star trek sometimes is.)

3. Star Trek - DS9. (i just love space stations

)

4. Star Trek - Voyager (didnt fully live up to its potential, but i still like it more than TNG)

5. Farscape (dunno what to say, somewhat different, but i liked it

6. Star Trek TNG (i dont know, maybe ive seen it too often. some episodes were great, but i somehow missed a continuing story line.)

7. Firefly (some episodes were quite good, but i didnt really like that whole western style)

8. Enterprise (i dont know, the first season was great, 2nd was ok and 90% of the 3rd season was crap, thats too much, even for me, and why that damn time travel all the time? it all shows downhill)

9. Andromeda ( that andromeda-chick is hot, but thats really all thats any good about it. i dont know, maybe i dont get it)

all i could think of. i dont yet know where to place star gate atlantis

I never really watched any, other than Star Trak TNG and Voyager...so I guess I'll have to go with those two, in no particular order

Babylon 5 is the only Sci Fi series i have watched with any degree of conviction in the last 10 years.

I liked Space: Above and Beyond. I blame Fox(spit) for its cancellation, even though (conflicting) reports say it was only supposed to run for one season.

I also blame Fox(spit) for the cancellation of Firefly, because they failed it by airing the pilot last, and messing around with the ordering of the episodes and giving it shoddy scheduling.

I dont know if i can find a way to blame them for the cancellation of Crusade - which would have been good eventually, if 'whoever' had given them a fair shot of a couple of seasons.

Andromeda: I never thought I'd prefer another show over Star Trek, yet somehow this just seems like what it should have been like. Great storylines, excellent character depth and all my more geeky needs are fulfilled by Harper.

Stargate - SG1: Once again, to rate anything over Star Trek for me is unusual, but I do feel this show has shown its pedagree and has been consistantly good both in production and storyline.

Farscape: I'm a lover of all things weird and unusual, and this certainly fits the title. Not to mention it has a few Aussie actors as well.

Tripping The Rift: Not a traditional Sci-Fi by any means, but any show that can take the piss out of the genre so well is well worth watching.

Stargate - Atlantis: Early stages yet, but it's starting to grow on me and looks very promising. I especially like the new bad guys (Wraiths), but that may come from my additional love of vampires and gothicy things.

Lexx (original mini series only): This also fits into the weird and wacky bracket. For most it's an aquired taste, but there really is no other show out there like it. I have to admit the quality of the new series is not quite the same as the original.

Star Trek - TNG: In retrospect the series looks a little watered down these days, but I still feel that characters like Picard and Data forged some of the most classic scenes/lines ever in a Sci-Fi to date.

Star Trek - Voyager: Many trek fans don't like this one, but I see it as TNG with less cheese and better production value.

Enterprise: Not a very traditional trek, and has many plot holes, but it's still a quality show and getting better with every episode.

Star Trek - DS9: Many people I've noticed herald this as the best of the series, but I'm just not as into it. It has less overall quality episodes, and really the last half of the final season was the only decent part. I geuss it always irritated me that they were always on the damned station, unlike its predessors where they were always on the move.

Crusade: B5 only not shit. B5 fans I've noticed call this a black sheep, but I found it far more interesting. I'm not sure why I never took to B5, I think it's because they went to the same acting class as the cast from Bold & The Beautiful. Either way it's a pitty Crusade went to an early grave.

i dont like a single one of the characters (well, i liked tyr, but they had him killed and replaced by some annoying guy).
i dont think im going to even finish season 4 if i can find ANYTHING else to watch

I like Andromeda a lot. Its one of the only shows i regularly watch that i dont acquire from the 'net, and look forward to watching on the television (along with SG-1 and a few non-sci-fi shows) with a big milkshake and large packet of 'Four Cheese and Onion' temptations (or sensations? The Walkers ones).

When i saw that series 3 started on Channel 4 last night (3am, can u believe) it actually brought a smile to my face. Shame they ruined the cool season 2 start of:

"He is the last guardian of a fallen civilisation; a Hero.. from another time. Faced with a Universe in chaos, Dylan Hunt recruits an unlikely crew and sets out to restore order to the galaxies. On the starship Andromeda HOPE LIVES AGAIN!"

That is cheesy sci-fi at its best. And being a sci-fi nerd i cant get enough of it.

Space above and beyond, it was only supposed to run for the 1 season by all accounts. Although the season finale kinda made it final

, I couldn't believe it when they killed wang,vansen, 'fous and crippled the admiral .

Babylon 5.

Andromeda, pre-ouroboros (trance changes episode) mainly.

Firefly as absolute number one.

The rest are all about equal, with the exceptions of Stargate, Farscape, Star Trek: Enterprise and Babylon 5, which I don't watch.

Tho the final episode is of considerably lower quality than the rest of the series.

They were never officially released on DVD by Fox(spit), tho i believe there is a seller of a self-made "high-quality" DVD set kncking about.

It depends on what criteria you mean "best" (or sci-fi for that matter). I really enjoyed Babylon 5 at the time, but it's not something I've been able to rewatch since then (individual episodes aren't particularly enjoyable by themselves).

Shows which get praise from myself :

Firefly
I really liked the western motif, but mainly it's the characters that make it great. Unlike the statist protaganists in Trek they're rebels (without any real cause) and whose sense of morality seems to be rooted a lot more in "common sense" than in Trek. The Captain killed people in cold blood and didn't agonise over it like a faggot. Can't wait for the movie.

Babylon 5
Taken as a whole, the best "epic" sci-fi TV series. Flawed on a number of levels (some pointless characters, poor acting, poor production values at times) but the coherence of the writing and the continuity puts it so far ahead of Trek it's embarrassing.

Red Dwarf
I don't know whether this classes as "sci-fi" or not, but on sheer rewatchability this might count as my favourite. OK, we'll not talk about Series 7 & 8, but almost every other episode I must have watched a dozen times or more. Very funny and under-rated use of quite "high level" sci-fi concepts.

Out of the Trek's I preferred Voyager and DS9 to the others although I had major problems with both (I've not seen enough of Enterprise to comment fully). Stargate seems pretty good in an "action" sort of sense, but again I've not watched a whole lot of it yet.

Obviously they're just the "space" sci-fi shows. X-Files was good once (for a brief period) and I also enjoyed John Doe quite a bit (is that sci-fi?). The Outer Limits has its moments I guess.

Most sci-fi I find frustrating to watch because I think it could be so much more.

Only Mcqueen, Hawkes and West were left alive.

The admiral was pretty much dying of his wounds, Wang was *very* dead, damphouse was dead looking maybe knocked out and vansen was alive but shotdown on the chigs homeworld.

Having just watched the last episode I figure that vansen and 'fouse are dead because the chigs breath purely nitrogen and dont have water on their homeworld...that and the fact their ship looked like it was in uncontrolled re-entry.

On the plus side west probably got laid........

I found my copies via limewire.

Hawkes and West were left alive. McQueen got a leg blew off by the Chiggy Ambassador. Admiral Ross had a cold so couldnt attend that meeting, so is fine. Wang died. Vansen and Damphousse landed on Anvil (a moon of the Chigs homeworld), could have been POW's if they survived.

i thought i was the only one to apreciate Space A&B! i also wish they'd carry'd on earth 2

erm in terms of star trek i prefer TNG but thats probably partly nostalgia, i watched it whilst growing up, B5 was the best 'space opera' type thing, although it could have been darker for my liking, also as dante mentioned its production wasn't up to the others but i think thye were short of $$$$$.

I have a confession to make, after slating it i watched the new battlestar galactica, i liked it. Some of the characters lacked the panache of the old ones, specifically star 'don't touch the face' buck the new woman doesnt get that starbuck was always happy on the inside whereas shes just PMTing.

1. Farscape (most creative show in my opinion, something different and cool characters)

2. Babylon 5 (best cohesive story line imo, at least until the war against the shadows was over. for some reason it reminded me of perry rhodan, a german sf "dime novel" series which I absolutly love)

3. Space A&B (only really bad thing about it was that it only lastet one series. my favorite episode was the pancake one with the johnny cash song - i think it was 'I walk the line')

4. Battlestar Galactica (how can someone not love something called battlestar, then again it probably sound cooler in german...)

5. Star Trek (the first one, I know it is hard to believe nowadays, but when I saw it first as child in the early 80s I loved and it was the first sf show I ever watched...)

6. DS9 (horrible in the beginning, horrible in the end, but the middle part has some really cool stuff)

7. Enterprise (the modern version, I like it so far (saw it up till the 2nd season i think), but I will have to see were it goes from here)

8. TNG (after a slow start I really came to like it, still it didn't live up to its potential)

If Buffy and Angel were considered sf shows I would have to rate them right up there with Farscape.
