brilliant olympic news
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/othe...12/4658925.stm
baseball has been axed from the 2012 olympics. Its nice to see the IOC implicitly admitting that baseball is nothing but rounders being played by people who are so sissy, that unlike the schoolgirls who play rounders, they have to wear armour.
in danger of sounding vaguely dace-esque
schoolgirls > baseball players.

Re: brilliant olympic news
Rugby has got to be a top contender to be introduced in England. Not so sure about the others though :S
Got to love that baseball won't be played though, that's one up on the Americans and the same with softball.

Rugby sevens or something. Maybe crocket or golf. What about croquet! I love croquet!

Re: brilliant olympic news
The choices for 2012 are Rugby Sevens, Squash, Golf, Karate and Roller Sports.
Choose two.
Aside from Sevens the rest dont seem terribly interesting. Golf dosnt televise well and why have squash when we already have tennis. I've no idea what Roller Sports comprises, but if it is simply Inline Hockey then I'd rather wait till the winter olympics for the real thing.
That leaves Karate then.

Re: brilliant olympic news
I would choose Rugby Sevens and Karate as the others seem really shit.
Although I probably won't watch more than 10 minutes of the entire games. So you could have Olympic Extreme Ironing for all I care.....

Re: brilliant olympic news
There's not many "extreme" places around London to do Extreme Ironing . Maybe the top of Canary Warf, or on the Millennium Dome (or whatever it's now called).
Karate is nice, and it'll hopefully get in second, but I don't know how popular it is generally

Thats like saying why have a 10k when you have a 5k run or discuss when you have hammer etc.
I'ld go for golf but i'm not sure how many of the top players would turn up for it. It might clash with the PGA championship, i can never remember when that is.

Re: brilliant olympic news
Olympic baseball was never a very good idea. The summer games overlapped with the baseball season (at least in most of the countries with professional baseball leagues), so many of the best players weren't going to be in the Olympics anyway.

Two more offical sounding reasons for baseball being axed are the lack of real drug testing, and the refusal of the MLB to take a break in the season for a Dream Team to go to the Olympics instead of second-string players.

Re: brilliant olympic news
Why not a combo event? Rugby golf. Rugby players think they are so tough lets give them all a nine iron and let them try to get a golf ball into a hole. This could also be called Full Contact Team Golf. Or you could combine it with the extreme ironing idea and have full contact extreme ironing rugby. Same idea as Rugby golf only with ironing boards and a rugby ball.

Who actually enters teams for the Olympic baseball anyway? USA and Japan? Anybody else?
I've never actually heard of anyone playing baseball in the UK. I know people who play ice hockey and I've heard of people playing American football but never baseball.

it should be golf and squash. the former isn't great televised, perhaps, but it's one of the world's biggest sports and should be recognised. the latter is perfect olympic fare given that badminton is already included.
and dda's post confused my brain.

Listening to the news, someone was yammering on about British bulldog determination.
Made me think, if the British can lick themselves like bulldogs, this might be a good Olympic event for 2012. Give the home team a bit of an advantage.

Honestly.. give it a couple centuries and I wouldn't be too surprised to see this listed at all. As the younger generation grows up and gets into important positions I think you'll find the trend of things start to lean towards technology.
As my my own suggestion, I'd love to see Iron Chef entered into the olympics

I'm sure I saw Squash in the Olympics before. Unless that was the Commonwealth games or something.
I'd have no problem seeing that in there. I seem to remember quite enjoying it.
Rugby is a bad idea though, and they should get rid of football.

Re: brilliant olympic news
Sports should be in the Olympics if it would make winning it the highest honour. For example, for a 100m runner, or any athlete, winning an Olympic gold is the pinnacle of their career. Winning the football Olympic gold will never be the best a player can do.

Re: brilliant olympic news
I'm a bit confused by the way the Olympics is organised these days anyway.
I thought it was all about the spirit of amateur competition. I realise that if it was all like that, then the general standard would be pretty poor, but are there still any sports that require competitors to be amateurs in order to compete for the Olympics?
Just asking.

I believe boxing is the only olympic sport which still requires "amateurs." The problem, of course, is that the word amateur has little meaning when you have various associations, businesses or even states "sponsoring" athletes.

There is much more involved in cricket than baseball, and cricket would have more of a case to be part of the olympics because it is a major sport in more countries in the world.
I also think darts would be a good olympic sport as it is very exciting to watch, but might be bit of a joke seeing andy fordham trying to walk lap of the track at opening ceremony
I think he would also be on for biggest sport tracksuit ever !!!!!

Re: brilliant olympic news
Baseball is an important sport in many Latin American countries. The Cubans, for one, are truly pissed. Castro himself tried out for an American professional team as a young man. Wonder what would have happened if he had succeeded.
The problem with cricket is that the Olympics are only two weeks long. Barely enough time for one good match.

Swimming is still an amateur sport, atleast in the UK, after all its governing body is the ASA - Amateur Swimming Association.

cricket is only popular because the audience can sit in the sunshine for a few days drinking beer without being interrupted by anything actually happening in the game. It is beaten only by croquet - a game where one can play in the sun, with a beer in one hand at the same time.
