Networking PC's

ok.......

i have just got a new pc its a 2.8ghz p4 i comes with a Intel(R) PRO/100 M Desktop Adapter, it runs windows XP now that is not the problem

i wanna network it with my old pc

my old pc is a p1 200mhz it runs windows 98 2nd ED, but the problem is i need to get a network card from somwhere and my old pc has no free PCI slots, i was wondering if i could get a external network card that could run through a USB port or somthing

the distance betwen the 2 pc's wil be about 25 meters so its a fair distance i was thinking wireless network but they are expensive and i dont know if i can get external ones for my old pc

i am looking to spend no more then £100 for the cards and cables

any help would be nice

thnx

Assuming one of the PCI slots in your win98 machine is taken up by a modem...

1. Remove modem.
2. Insert cheap £10 NIC.
3. Connect machines with cat5 crossover (£20-£30 for 25m).
4. Configure new machine for ICS.
5. Profit \o/

MT is an unknown quantity at this point
Generic cheapo one
Expensive one

You would also need a 30m cross over cat5 cable - good luck wiht that! Probably the best option would be to buy a large box of cat5 cable - dont pay more than 10p/m+VAT - a crimp tool - £10 Pc World - and some crimps - cheap - , and make it yourself.

alternatively, two of these would work just fine.
