How do I revert to an older Direct X version?

I've recently installed version 9.0 but its complete crap, so basically I want version 8.1 back. How do I do this? Is it even possible at all?

DirectX 9.0 End-user Runtime

Posted: December 19, 2002

Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX 9.0 includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs.

System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems:
Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP

Supported Languages:
Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Czech, Dutch, English (American), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Swedish

Instructions
Click the Download link to start the download.
Do one of the following:

To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.
To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save or Save this program to disk.
NOTES:

DirectX 9.0 End-User Runtime setup requires an internet connection during setup. The DirectX 9.0 Redist is available for download for those users that do not have an internet connection available during installation or when setup has trouble connecting to the Microsoft server.

The DirectX 9.0 runtime cannot be uninstalled. We recommend Windows Me and Windows XP users create a "System Restore" point before installing. For information on creating a restore point, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

Windows Millennium Edition: Microsoft Knowledge Base article 267951.
Windows XP: Microsoft Knowledge Base article 310405.
You remember reading this before downloading it from microsoft yes/no? Please dont tell me you blithely applied a patch without reading the proviso's and conditions of that patch?

Not for the sake of extra 3Dmarks, but rather as the drop that I got indicated to me that I had lost a significant amount of performance

DX v 8.1 = 10200 3dmarks
DX v 9.0 = 8521 3dmarks

That is a large drop for one API upgrade.

DX 9 is still buggy as hell:

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=6952

this only covers Flight Simulator, but I guess similar problems can be seen in other games too...
