is there any way to surpass win NT crap to get on ingame chatservers, or like IRC

without using browser based 'emulations'

The MMORPG I play gives the possibility to log into the ingame chatservice but same as IRC I cant get on it from work.

Is there any way to surpass such things?

I have no idea about the technical problems inside this but if i am correct it all has to do with sockets and stuff.

Is this a familiar problem which is just impossible to get by when running my office pc with NT ?

At a guess your company has a firewall which blocks all non-essential ports.

The short version of the answer is no, you can't get round it without using proxies.

The longer answer says you can do it but it will likely lead to you being escorted off the premises when the IDS starts throwing up major warnings of a firewall breach

[edit] It has nothing to do with your OS though.[/edit]

[edit2]Can you run an ircd on port 80? And would it help? Anyone know? [/edit2]

I couldn't do it, I don't know enough about the techniques. I know there are ways to hop across a firewall but they'll set off big alarms and probably get you sacked real fast.

You can techically run an IRCD on any port you like. It's just a server accepting simple raw socket connections. Finding a host that allows IRCDs to have port 80 connections is another thing. Several do open port 8080 though, including one of the Netgamers ones I believe.

My solution to this problem was to run psybnc (an IRC 'bouncer' program) from home while I am at uni.

psybnc runs on port 80 on my home connection, allowing me to connect to it using mIRC from within uni. It basically just acts as a 'tunnel' between the PC you're using (behind a firewall) and the outside IRC server.

However, that's not really what you need here, if you want to connect to something that's not an IRC server.

I can tell you how to run psybnc etc., but I don't know what kind of proxy server you would use to connect to a non-IRC server (though I am sure that such a thing exists).

ok, I want to get on IRC then.

I have downloaded psybnc. When I click on the exe files it gives me a little black window for a sec and then disapears without further action.

What do I do?

The problem with running an ircd on 80 is that anything Min this low range needs to be run as root.

Do you really want your ircd running as root?

Good point, well made But couldn't you run a public bouncer on port 80 to redirect to localhost:6667and run the ircd on 6667?

Read the docs. You need to make a config file at least.

Theres no real need for it to run as root, it could call setuid after it starts listening for connections, leaving only a very small process still running as root to respawn if it dies.
