Righty I've got a question for you;

I've got some files which are on a private / local server but what I wish to load up from a secure website, which is external ie something like

<a href="LOCAL-SERVER\Folder\Filename.doc">Filename</a>

Is this at all possible?

for a local file : <a href="file:///path/to/Filename.doc">filename</a>
for a remote file : <a href="http://url/to/filename.doc">filename</a>

or something like that
that would only work if you are on a machine which can access both the private/local server or files and the secure website btw.
If you want the secure website to act as a gateway then something else is required.

Generelly if you use file:// references in HTML documents which arent only for offline/local use, you are doing something wrong.

The description of your problem wasnt precise enough for me to answer.
