oi LSE fags
hey doodz this is like mainly to Dante Hicks and other random people who may go to LSE
well the big news of my day is that i've been offered a place to study economics at LSE starting in 2004 with an AAA (+ pass at my fourth a level).
so my question is (becuase i won't ask students there on any open days) what's it like? both in a work sense and life style shit doods.
i'm sure there's info on the prospectus but **** me if i'm going to trawl through that, just tell me thnx ta

Re: oi LSE fags
I met someone on an open day who said he had loads of work to do all of the time, but justified that with the amount of money he would earn at the end.
He really didn't make it sound worthwhile.
Plus I hold a grudge as they rejected me, which was fine... until I met someone who had got an offer for the same course, and she was utterly shit.

Re: oi LSE fags
I do a joke of a course so I don't have any work to do. I'm also a post-graduate so I'm not really involved in that social stuff. I ocassionally leer at the cuter girls, but I doubt that counts and wouldn't interest you anyway.
The facilities are cool (library = the win), the lecturers are generally good and the people are friendly enough. Oh, and they also attract a number of those sort of high profile visitors to give lectures (like George Soros and wankers like that).
The only problem with it is the high number of foriegn students (which isn't a problem per se, but it's just half of them seem to be there to pay exorbinant fee's - £17,000 a year for economics I think), the most bizarrely illogical building layout, and some of the more cretinous socieities.
In the first week I had to fight to get passed about 50 society reps. Ignoring the usual "Iranian Society" type crap, the rest seemed to be either "The Socialist Society" (which obviously I don't mind) or the "Business/Equity/Capitalist Pig Dog Societiy". Every week the latter put up posters that some **** from Morgan Stanley is coming to give a talk on how you can exploit the 3rd world and still get home by 5pm to have your tea.
I also hear economics is a heavy workload.
It's located in the middle of London so I presume if you don't like anyone round there you could just go do other stuff if strictly necessary.
Rents are obviously high so it's obviously imperative you get a place in halls (I'd imagine, as I say, not an undergrad though).

Re: oi LSE fags
Didn't apply, they don't do my course.
But I do, well I did, go to this stupid Saturday school thing there for Maths. The library was pretty amazing but the lectures were right ****ing irritating. Well, the maths ones are anyway. My girlfriend tells me there is one evil Sociology one.
I realise this helps you little..
Anyway, Warwick rejected me. Arseholes.
Although to be honest I wasn't going to go there anyway, but still!
That course had something like a 75-1 course placing anyway, 13 places on the actual course.
I'm going to Sussex! They lowered their offer for me. Means I have to put something shit like Kent as second choice. Either that or Hull..
Not much of a choice to be honest.

Dunno about you but I don't have the motivation and energy to do their workload.
I chose my course at Bath as if I work hard here and get good placements etc. I can earn as much as the next man. At the same time my work load is absolutely minimal, so I get to have a great time and with the placements ranging from £12k-40kPA I can make a lot of money to have an even greater time.
Well done on getting a place by the way.

Re: oi LSE fags
What's wrong with a high workload anyway, assuming you enjoy the course you're doing? Obviously you dont want to be buried under a pile of work 24/7, but if you dont particularly like the idea of 'having' to spend ~30 or so hours a week playing about with the subject youre studying, maybe you should think about doing a different course?
If you actually like economics, surely you'd want to be at a place where you'd be able to study a lot of it farily often, and to be around others who shared your passion for the subject (although I assume a lot/most people at LSE are probably there for the $$$$$$$$ rather than the love of the subject)

Re: oi LSE fags
If I wanted to do something I liked I would have done maths or computing. Being me with an attention span of 5 seconds and the motivation of an apple...
I went for the course which to me seemed to have the best effort at uni to graduate pay ratio.
But I do agree with what you are saying, I'm just personally not one of those people though.
So what I was suggesting probably was that he should make sure he does want to but in the effort etc. before deciding to definately going there.

Re: oi LSE fags
From what I know, decent city firms dont really care that much what your degree is in; its more to do with the quality of the degree than the subject area generally. If you want to do something that is directly related to your degree though, its probably not a good idea to do a degree you hate, since youll probably dislike the job at the end too.

Re: oi LSE fags
Well I know I can get a first on my degree. And I know top city firms employ from my uni and course.
Getting a first doing a BBA here, is easier than say getting a first in maths, as I would have to work for that.
Its a means to an end. But as things go, an easy means.

York is boring as hell. The uni itself is very good, but when you're not in lectures or working you'll be bored shitless. I know someone who managed to avoid leaving the campus at all between arriving in September and going home for Christmas, because there's very little to do in York.
Liverpool and Sheffield are both great cities. I love it here in Sheffield (though it gets a tad cold at times). Bristol's expensive, and I know very little about Leeds or Bath.
