We don't like Uncle Tony no more :(
Putting aside the fact that I've always said he looks like a used car salesman who you wouldn't buy a car from, Uncle Tony seems to be digging his own grave. A poll for tomorrow's Times puts Labour only 1 poitn ahead of the Conservative party in the opinion polls, something that wuold have been unthinkable 2 months ago.
If the US and UK stand firm and Saddam backs down then he's going to milk it for all it's worth (probably justifiably) but if things go wrong and British people start dying he might as well resign from office immediately.
This has to be the biggest gamble of his entire political career, he's either going to be a hero for standing firm and averting a war or he'll be pilloried for causing one.
A or B, Hero or Zero, what do you think will happen?

I wasn't under the impression he'd be standing for re-election anyway, and I can still see 'the party' getting back into office as half* of them disagree with war, coupled with the fact that they've ****ed up surprisingly little recently.

The worst that can happen to blair is that brown takes over as PM and he gets a cabinet post.
I really don't see the tories or the lib dems getting their acts together enough to actually look like a government in waiting. They've both had long enough, and haven't done anything.

If (as seems likely should US foreign secretary Blair resign) Brown does 'step up to the plate' I think the best Blair could hope for is Minister for Public Toilets in Glasgow.

as long as we have the worst possible people in positions of power, we can always hope "things could be better".

maybe that dosier had some influence on that poll? the public usually doesnt like to get fooled. if he does such things more often hell end up like schröder here :/
i dont think there is any way the war can be avoided, you dont send 100,000s of troops down there and then call them back home, i dont see that happening. the war will start no matter what, with or without uno.

More like a choice between having Beckham as a goalie or having a rotten banana skin instead. Brown may be a great chancellor but he's also the only one who could do the PM job.

i dont see how the outcome can be deemed a success or failure within the remaining time frame of his prime ministership. Iraq will be 'taken over', some sort of democratic regime will be installed, and everyone will be happy. But the real test is if Iraq is still a successful country 10 - 15 yrs from now. TB or GB claiming that they have 'done good' becuase everything is hunky dory while 200,000 troops are in iraq proping up the regime is a bit nuts.

I'm incredibly dubious about this poll, (I haven't been able to see who The Times got to run it, but it seems fairly odd.) and even if it is true, then by christ it won't be the result of any real affirmation of Tory policies. (I'm amazed that people don't realise that The Tories would have been even more hawkish than Blair has been - especially IDS. Oh yes, but the public are a bit thick.) Sounds like mid-term blues, if it's correct.
Although I'm sure, even if it is true, that it won't be anywhere near that come election time, I think his handling of this has been something of a mistake, tbh. He should have courted public opinion much more carefully. Whether it'll change when they have Saddam's head on a pike is anyone's guess.

There does seem to be a kind of sod's law regarding Chancellors going on to become PM (Callaghan, Major.), but I think Brown would be quite good. He is, assuredly, much more 'earthy' and closer to the public imagination than Blair can ever be. It would, I think, be a welcome change after Blair and his spin-mania.

It does have a good side though. The Tories will now likely make jumbo gains in the upcoming Council elections, which will reinforce IDS' position, which will certainly help the Labour Party come election day.

So, the british public opinion is against war. But the labour goverment is still pro-war, which leads to an increased support for the conservative tories, who are even more pro-war.

We're not pro-Conservative, we're anti-Tony. Nothing scares Labour more than the possibility of the Conservatives getting more votes, an increase in the popularity of the Lib Dems doesn't hold the same fear.
