Buying stuff from the USA instead of the UK
So,
I can buy an ibook for $1050.
The exchange rate between the Pound and the Dollor is around: 0.55
Meaning that i can buy an ibook for around £600 pounds.
Can anyone see something wrong with my cunning scheme (besides the fact you probably dont like macs)?

Re: Buying stuff from the USA instead of the UK
You have to pay tax / duty (about 25% altogether) on that, and you won't be able (probably) to use the warranty in a convenient fashion.

It'll have an American power adapter too I would imagine so you either need to buy a UK one from somewhere or get one of those converty dealies.

Living in Jersey rocks... when I buy a PC, it is the "before VAT" price

Re: Buying stuff from the USA instead of the UK
You pay the tax when it comes into the UK iirc from reading the p-p-p-powerbook thing.

Re: Buying stuff from the USA instead of the UK
You'll probably have to pay some kind of import duty unless you can find a way to get around it. A lot of it would depend on the seller.

Re: Buying stuff from the USA instead of the UK
I managed to get ultra cheap computer componants from the U.S. by getting my uncle to buy them over there then posting them to me. Even with the package labeled as $600 worth of computer parts I never was asked to pay any duty. Was shipped through US Postal service too.
Never figured out why but wasnt complaining.

Re: Buying stuff from the USA instead of the UK
In theory you have to pay tax on everything you buy in America and get shipped over here. Whether it's on Ebay (even second hand) or on some other online retailer.
The responsibility is completely down to you, the seller doesn't have to mention it and they will never pay the tax for you.
In practice things might work very differently, I've never done it myself.

Neither
My mum was invited to work over there in 1994 for the health service, and her contract got extended to a permanent one.
I think you have to live there for 15 years (or be born there) to have residency qualification. I've only been there for 10

Re: Buying stuff from the USA instead of the UK
import tax?
if you have to pay it all depends on if you get caught by customs and excise
you could ask the shipper if they will mark that parcel as a gift to fraudulently not pay
but you might get in trouble if caught

Re: Buying stuff from the USA instead of the UK
US shippers now have to pay VAT and usuailly require fairly insane international shipping fees. You will probably be required to pay import taxes and such at the post office too.

Re: Buying stuff from the USA instead of the UK
interpid : huh?
p.s.
When mum bought a rather expensive watch in the states the company marked it as a 'gift' so we woulnt have to pay tax on it. (it was sent via mail after something went wrong or some such. i think it had to be repaired)
