problem viewing webpages
my sister has informed me that her computer is unable to view webpages - none at all. she can still use programs such as msn but cant get a browser to display any pages (she has tried IE and opera). she is on a cable connection, if that helps.

can anyone suggest anything please as she is annoying me with 'chris can you please sort this' phone calls - cheers

if you need any more info just let me know

Sounds like she's buggered her proxy settings (either added one where there shouldn't be one, or deleted/changed them where there should).
If this is the UK and NTL cable we're talking, there should be no proxy settings.

Check to make sure that Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings in IE is in the following state:
[x] Automatically detect settings
[ ] Use automatic configuration script
[ ] Use a proxy server for your LAN
[ ] Bypass proxy server for local connections (although this one doesn't really matter as it has no effect if the one above it is unchecked)

If that doesn't work, try installing a different browser (such as Mozilla) and see if it works with that. Then at least you know if it's IE where the problem lies, or something wider ranging.

Command prompt

ipconfig /release *

Turn off modem (unplug it), turn off router (if applicable). Plug in modem, wait 10 secs (just in case) then plug in router. Wait 1 min.

ipconfig /renew *

i had tried what you suggested megla the other day - but the problem was 167 types of spyware on her comp - spyboysd sorted it

What is it about sisters and spyware?
One of my mates spends a few hours every time he goes to his parent's place cleaning all the crap off the pc that his sister's managed to get on (ad loaders, spyware, porno dialers, the lot).
2 months later and it's all right back again.

The recent batch of worms caused this problem (i.e. internet connection working, but not the web) for me a couple of weeks ago.
