Sounds like she's buggered her proxy settings (either added one where there shouldn't be one, or deleted/changed them where there should).
If this is the UK and NTL cable we're talking, there should be no proxy settings.
Check to make sure that Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings in IE is in the following state:
[x] Automatically detect settings
[ ] Use automatic configuration script
[ ] Use a proxy server for your LAN
[ ] Bypass proxy server for local connections (although this one doesn't really matter as it has no effect if the one above it is unchecked)
If that doesn't work, try installing a different browser (such as Mozilla) and see if it works with that. Then at least you know if it's IE where the problem lies, or something wider ranging.
