The KMT, the opposition, (The Kuomintang, who until fairly recently had governed Taiwan as a one-party state since The KMT fled to Taiwan after The Communists won the civil war in the late 40's.) were also up in arms about this, as they see working towards a better relationship with China as the best approach, and hopefully leading to some sort of eventual reunification, although that is pretty much a sentimental aspiration nowadays. The DDP (Democratic Progressives.), which is Chen's party, is rather pro-indepedence and far less open to advances from China, which obviously seriously pisses off China which still claims the island as a rebel province. The whole atmosphere has not really been helped by France's rather insensitive decision to recently take part in joint naval excercises with The PRC's navy.
That's about it I think.
