Re: Itt
I don't particularly like the "alcohol (or drugs) use == lack of character" type argument though, although I see what he's getting at. Was Karl Marx of less character because he got drunk and challenged people to duels at times? Seems like a left-over from Puritan nonsense tbh.
Obviously he's correct on the running / disadvantage analogy. However, a wider question would probably be why certain colleges / universities are worse than others, and why getting into any of them should be a "reward" (or punishment) for anyone.

Re: Itt
I did.
My point is, the running analogy is bollocks. We are told the blacks in this case are more intelligent and more determined than the whites. If that's the case why do they finish behind in score at all? What's the excuse, get to the fking library, if these people are as intelligent and determined as they are made out to be, surely a 300 point deficit against the white kids is impossible regardless of who taught them.
He claims that intelligence is nothing to do with character and then bands elements of character together with physical fitness and strength in his analogy. That just seems wrong to me

When I was young I would just sit in my room and go through a library book on whatever subject I was required to learn. I went to a school full of 9 year old crackheads where the teachers are routinely assualted by both students and their parents. By GCSE time I was well ahead of most people, based purely on my own effort.
In my experience, people who go to private schools are useless. I should have an honourary degree from all the help I gave my housemate, and his parents had to pay annual school fees that are more than what my family has to live on. All the good teaching in the world wasnt going to make him clever.

And my grandfather smoked a hundred cigarettes a day and lived to be 82, so smoking doesn't cause cancer, right?
I don't think the author says (or means) blacks are more intelligent than whites. Intelligence (in the word he appears to be using the word) is the end result, not a trait he's trying to measure. He's talking about character (determination, as you say). Determination isn't all powerful however.
Let's pretend we can measure these things (we can't ofc), and I'm 10% "more determined" than you. You start life as a kid in a "good" home, with lots of books, computers, etc. You go to a good school (not necessarily private, state schools in richer areas are generally superior to state schools in poor areas), your parents teach you, you have some home tutoring.
I have none of this, but due to my superior determination, manage to almost catch up. Your headstart is still decisive, and so beat me on my SATs (or whatever). Don't you think that's a possibility?

Well, yeah. I meant more in the ethical sense of why we're allowing this. If you go from Cambridge / Harvard to Birmingham Polytechnic / Harlem Community College it's fairly obvious why the latter is inferior.

Re: Itt
Who mentioned "forcing"?
If I see two people, one upset because his buddy has an apple and he doesn't, and I give him an apple I suppose I've "forced" them to be equal. I wouldn't see that as a bad thing though.
If by force you did actually mean coercion, then that's bad whatever the outcome (well, usually). Forced inequality would be bad too. Forced yellow trousers would be bad. Etc, etc.

People who live in a hole in the ground with zero resources and no means to obtain them are screwed whatever happens.
Obviously it's a possibility (T&F, when did anyone mention anything about bloody genetics) but I don't think it's as big an issue as made out.
I don't want to sound unreasonable but if someone wants to learn something they'll do it.

Genetics is pretty much the only other explanation for the kids of poorer parents doing crapper than richer children unless you're willing to buy into the "disadvantage model" (for want of a better term).
edit : I obviously do think it's a fairly big issue. I wrote my undergrad dissertation on this (it was awful, but the point still stands) and basically poorer kids face disadvantage in :
Health (from embryo through to adulthood)
Education (from the parental environment they grow up in to the University they end up in)
Random things (poorer children more likely to be run over for instance)
These things are never monolithic obviously. A poorer kid can still do well, just like a smoker can live a healthy life. It does increase probabilities of "failing" though, as does cigarettes => cancer.

Nothing
He won 1,000,000 in a bitch-off contest... and he goes every year, winning every time... and then uses PA forums as target practice.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::;;
Now, on i side not, HOW CAN YOU TAKE INHERITANCE AWAY FROM RICH PPL, THEY OWN IT, WHY CANT THEY KEEP IT?
And do you all have any idea how high the tax rate is for people whoe make >100k a year? Its crazy. ITS even more outrageous for corporations...
My family only makes around 15k (w/o cash) a year.... but the fact that >100k a year has to pay just over 50%... makes me chuckle a bit..

No-one's mentioned taking away anything from anyone.
And Personal Income Taxes on high earners are much higher than corporation taxes, unless you meant something else.
