You don't want to kill all the poor people. They're far too useful for fighting Corsican emperors and rebellious colonials. Plus taxes pay for armies and navies, which are

Yes. There's a crate of muskets in the corner. Give them to the residents of Durham, and we'll launch an invasion of Denmark.

If we're switching tactics to the destruction of academic institutions, then King's College Cambridge should be first on the list. Damned Communists, the lot of them.

Not in historical context. The conquest of France in 1940 is comparable--similar sized countries, populations and lengths of campaigns; yet the number of civilian casualties in France was far greater.

You can't really compare with historical conflicts, the difference in tech is just too great.
Furthermore, I don't think a BARE MINIMUM of 5:1 (military:civilian) is very good, is it? (12-45k military deaths, 8-11k civilian)

Civil War - now there's a good idea.
Of course it could just be North vs South or East vs West, but they're probably about equally matched, so perhaps we could all just gang up on the Welsh, sack Cardiff and burn all the daffodils.

Not very good compared to what? If you're dismissing historical comparisons then what the hell are you measuring it against--your guess of what you think the casualty rates ought to be?

Cambridge vs Oxford.
Of course, it then depends on who can bring in Bristol, Durham, York and Warwick. We should probably get the northern two, which would give us a tactical advantage in terms of manouverability (we'd control the whole northern half of the country), but we'd be at a disadvantage to an Oxford schlieffen plan kind of affair, because of distances.

it's certainly one thing if he had gotten a few every day since he'd been inaugurated. it would be another if this was the first warning he'd heard, and he just said 'bring em on' and headed for a well-deserved month's vacation.

I'm not going to argue the first one.
The third one is silly. No republican or democrat has so much as mentioned welfare in years.
I'd like to know what the economy one is supposed to mean. Republicans like a top to bottom money flow maybe? Democrats like money flowing from the bottom to the 'bottum'? wtf?
But the fourth one is what I'm curious about. I'd like to hear one or two places where their are actual policy differences between the Democrats and republicans.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day it used to be 10:1 soldier to civilian (revolutionary etc.) by world war 2 it was 10:1 the other way.

Do you have any evidence for the former point?
For the latter point, what do you mean? What does the BBC show which others agree not to show? If this is the case (which I'm dubious of) surely that would be somehting in their favour?

assuming accuracy, you can't really compare a revolution where the idea isto secure the country through comparitively bloodless means to total war with emphasis on massive bombings in times of conscription/massive military service

Oxford would lose all their allies by insisting they allow Oxford Proctors to patrol their streets to search for Cambridge sympathisers, and after a few minor skirmishes and a short siege it would all end with tea and scones in the burnt-out shell of the Bodleian Library.
Sounds like a good plan to me.

We should probably keep the Bod. It's less ugly than the UL, and would be a good place to keep political prisoners.

I would have thought the UL was ideal for use as a prison. It even has bars on the windows already, and has that whole "abandon hope all ye who enter here" air about it.

It's also highly phallic, like all good prisons should be.
The main problem with using the UL as a prison is that it opens onto Clare on the one side, and there's a free run to the Cavendish on the other.
I wouldn't trust Clare to hold off any oxyford types for long (although they'd make excellent cannon fodder, methinks), especially not if they had armed themselves from the labs.

The UL is pretty prominent from my window. If I had a rocket launcher, i could blow the top off it right now.
I shall not hesitate to do so if Oxford occupy it.

There's decent security on the WSB, it might serve as a good base of operations. It's also covered fairly well by the engineering department.

my point was vis a vis tactitus' "dismissing historical comparisons" statement.
the bottom line is that you can have any given civilian/soldier casualty ratio and you can find a historical comparison that makes it obscenely low or obscenely high.
so, basically, historical comparisons are pointless here (as Dante would say, "You can prove anything with facts").
What should be asked is as follows: how many civilian deaths are reasonable, given our objective and ability (as jakiri would say, "but they're STALINIST crabs")?

Well, assuming you can get a good crossfire set up, we can hold the line at Queen's Road, falling back to prepared positions in Trinity and John's if necessary.

It's also adjacent to part of Trinity, and I suspect the greedy Oxford types would be compelled by avarice to go there first in order to steal our money. At that point, of course, we'd detonate Burrell's Field. I'm sure no one would miss it.

I don't think there's much chance of that. I can't imagine anyone willingly barricading themselves inside the UL. Even if they do (you never know with these crazy Oxonians), we could just lock them in and wait for them to go insane.

The university website has provided me with this fine map, complete with Oxford's direction of attack (The Big Red Arrow). I suspect they know more than we think.

Well, if that's where they're planning to attack, we don't need to worry. They don't appear to be aiming for any traffic lights, so they'll all be killed by the crazy Cambridge motorists.

They'll probably be in the basement, trying to find pornographic books that aren't on the main shelves.

Eventually, the bodies will pile up to create a safe crossing. I advise hidden positions in the backs, to further wittle their numbers down before we arrive to the choke points at the bridges.

You suspect they've acquired the ability to read? This will be trickier than I imagined. We must find this leak at once, and plug it before all is lost.

We could just destroy the bridges. Granted, we'll lose a bunch of colleges, including Magdalene, half of John's and half of Queens', but then I never did like those modern buildings anyway.

They'll have converted the UL staff to their evil cause (along with any foolish students who happen to be in the UL on the day of their attack), and will be using their minions' superior knowledge to surmount their own obvious intellectual disabilities.

Re: World's Smallest Political Quiz
"About 10,000 (By May of last year, there were over a thousand known civilian deaths and nearly a thousand more suspected in Baghdad alone. Add in another 8,000 wounded in the capital, too). Considering the scale of the war, it's pretty huge."
Credible news artical please. No suppositions, or accounts from the taliban/al-quaeda.
Anyone can guess something, it has nothing at all to do with wether its true or not, so you cant prove empircally that Bush knew (i dont think he did, they might have had clues, different organizations, but they werent put together well enough to come up with any definative clues)
Additionally, Clinton did know that al-qeada was building massive training camps in afganistan. All he did was launch a couple of missiles into afganistan=not effective.

They can take the colleges. Whos cares? We can also booby trap them, and the John's bridge is a killing zone.

We all know that Oxford types are sinister. From there, it's merely a small logical step to assuming that, once they enter the building, they will go LEFT.
Hence, I believe they will be found in the East Asian Reading Room, and if they decide to move upwards, in molecular chemistry.

Re: World's Smallest Political Quiz
If the USA had David Palmer as their president, the terrorist attacks would have been thwarted in just under a day.
True story!

Re: World's Smallest Political Quiz
If true, that is actually a very small number for a war.

I'd be in favour of booby trapping them even if we don't have a war against Oxford, and any plan that involves death and John's students is fine by me.

You're assuming, of course, that they can tell left from right. It seems to me just as likely that they'd end up in the Map Room (which wouldn't be much of a problem, as they wouldn't know how to use the maps), from where they'd probably be drawn to the Tea Room by the aroma of hot beverages and savoury snacks. Poisoning the tea would seem like a good plan (and would have the added bonus of killing most of the UL staff).

Re: World's Smallest Political Quiz
4k isnt that bad.. How many of them were used as body-shields. He know for a fact he used that practice in the first war. Bringing civilians to military targets... he was an evil person.
In addition, thats no where near your ten thousands. The site that you gave me said around 1000.. then added 1k here and there..
The problem with those is that they were survey at iraqi hospitals.. so no entirely credible..

Re: World's Smallest Political Quiz
I think the best plan is what I'm doing now.
Sitting back in a dressing gown, drinking a very large gin and tonic.
