Who said that a US-EU free-trade area was impossible?

I'd use to search functionality merely to digitally fist the wrongdoer but I haven't done so. Let's say this does pan out, what are your thought on it? Economics go go go!

Re: Who said that a US-EU free-trade area was impossible?

In terms of achieving anything of substance, I wouldn't hold your breath.

It'll reduce airfares and probably make it easier to trade for large well-established companies in both regions, but these hopes of it bringing the two areas together with the aim of helping the environment (and climate change) is a bit optimistic.

However, these things take time and maybe this is the first step to centralising trade throughout our two continents.

Re: Who said that a US-EU free-trade area was impossible?

I'm more interested a free trade area in terms of international relations really. If there's various unified financial institutions, like the EU has now, for this free trade area it would have an enormous amount of power over other states, China and India in particular. Perhaps that's their reasoning behind it.

The social implications are also ponderous.

Re: Who said that a US-EU free-trade area was impossible?

I don't think anyone said it was impossible, but T&F said there would be issues to make it difficult, in response to a Nod post.

Re: Who said that a US-EU free-trade area was impossible?

I probably said that its never going to be the case where its possible to import large quantities of goods from the US without paying customs duty because the british electronics retail industry (amongst other things) would probably collapse overnight, and im sticking by that. Pretty much every major European country has far higher sales taxes than the US, so it seems fairly unlikely to happen.

Why would you need unified financial institutions for a free trade area ?

Nodrog is also right, God knows who the BBC Economics editor is and why he allowed them to run that story.
