my co-workers keep telling me to remove my head from Wayne's ass as some of them see him as an overrated player. Let's pray he scores another one so I can point at laugh tomorrow at them when entering the office

Re: Rooney
Go go gadget Rooney!
Was pretty amazing. With 30 seconds to go before half time too.
I suppose I'll grudgingly admit Scholes didn't do a bad job either.
And THIS time there's no Hesky on the pitch so we might not end up with free kicks and penalties flying in with 5 minutes to go!

Re: Rooney
wtf is wrong with Owen??? Just before Rooney's goal Owen had nothing but one defender between him and the goal. The Owen I know would have dodged round the defender and knocked it in. Instead he decides to stand there looking like a numpty for a few seconds then passes it.
It doesn't help though that Rooney keeps falling back to the half way line leaving Owen stranded up in the penalty box. I guess those two just aren't suited to each other.

Re: Rooney
You know what sums up Owen's tournament for me?
About 20 minutes in, he was chasing a Croat back towards the half way line, ran into him, fell over, and I don't think the player noticed.

Re: Rooney
Yeah owen does seem to be sucking badly.
Every time something's come his way he's either missed it (most of the time because he's such a shortarse that he can't reach it) or played it badly. When he got it then I thought it'd be straight in. Scholes (and whoever headed it across to him, can't remember) did a good job in keeping track of it after the used-to-be-amazing Owen made a mess of what could have been a relatively straight-forward chance.
Oh well it went in thats what counts.

Re: Rooney
Not really.
Owen has been average at best throughout the entire tournament. He's just not been playing in the way that made him so famous a few years ago.
Rooney on the other hand has scored the majority of our goals and has a habit of being in the right place at the right time. Better than that, he can MAKE it the right place and the right time if it isn't to start with (like just before the end of the second half).
Fair play, he could do without leaving owen at the top quite so much in this match but I guess Sven might mention that to him at half time.

Rooney has played very well for England.
And re: the hype, don't forget the rooneymobile was started by one Arsene Wenger, who said he was the best talent he had seen in English football.

Re: Rooney
I am Dutch. During this tournament it's the first time I see the man in action and what I saw is what I like to see in a striker. He has balls, technically maybe quite limited but he has spirit, speed, agression, no doubts and seems fearless.

Don't worry, we'll be saying how shit Rooney is before too long
Although some of Owen's criticism might be because he's been playing badly in the Premiership. I wouldn't know about that since I don't watch club football.

Re: Rooney
Thomislav Butina isn't exactly what I'd call a world class keeper btw....
Anyone know why they didn't play Stipe?
Bare in mind people, he's performed against two of the weaker countries in europe (god knows it's a horrible statement about european football that they were there in the first place), he's gotta pull it out against a top class side for me before I reckon him a world class player....
He's done well but there is a case of the hype far exceeding the results....

The one where he was slated for being an arrogant greedy shit with no awareness who took a dive in the box for a missed penalty?

I didnt say it was a perfect game for him.
He didnt dive but he should have passed, but he still was a pain in the arse for the French.

Re: Rooney
In the End how about I put some perspective on this.
He's got the startings of an Alan Shearer, but he isn't an Alan Shearer yet, he's just been thrust into the limelight sooner which I don't know is a good thing, the value on his head is for a striker like Shearer in his peak (adjusted for inflation) but you aren't going to get that out of him for another 3 years if shearer's career is anything to go by.
Alan Shearer on his peak form for England is by miles and away better than Rooney has and will perform in this tournament, hence I think Rooney is radically overhyped, Shearer Destroyed Holland in '96 for example back when Holland were considered a dangerous team advent Ajax generation.
He is not better or more outstanding than pele, he is not worth 50 million currently (I can't imagine paying 50 mil and the wages that would go with it now would be in anyway retrievable in years to come) he is scoring against sub-par international sides with non top league class keepers imo and in some cases non top class defenders and that doesn't surprise me, all he could do against a world class defence and keeper was get shown up and dive for a penalty.
As Kura would say to Leshy.
SCHTOP!, This striker isn't ready yet!
p.s. I think this is more overreaction to the severity of the match, if your strikers and midfielders hadn't come out on form today they would of been villianized like Saddam, Osama and George Bush. The fact that you won a match that was incredibly important has you praising them like the total opposite... overreaction I Say overreaction, they performed as they should of performed and for that they deserve credit but they don't deserve idolisation like greek gods.

Form an exciting partnership with someone, be less selfish, be more professional (he fouls and takes too many cards), actually perform like that against stronger international sides.... not look like another Alan Smith in the making....
He's not ready for anything, even the reports from people watching the training camp said he looked nervous and quiet, he's lucking out atm, truly lucking out and the fact that this tournament is a mediocre all european one instead of a world cup is guising that he isn't ready yet.
Not ready.
Got it?

Once agian, I still feel Rooney is overrated, but I think he is having the tournament of his life atm, and long may it continue. Owen and Beckham need to pluck their fingers from their asses and get back to playing proper football.

He's now had a hand in 3 goals. While its not the Owen we predicted good or shite, England are still the top scorers in the tournament. I think hes mince, but your just taking the piss with the owen bashing merely because rooney is around

Sup Tim Henman. In Fairness, with attacking players, theres generally either good or bad days. And its attackers who steal the headlines. But the english are quick to turn on players. We scots arent. We dont have any players to turn on.

Usually its boring, and england are lucky to take any points. This time it was a 6 goaler in which neither team could defend fort knox.

Re: Rooney
Page me when he scores two goals against any of France, Holland, Germany, Portugal, Czech Republic or Italy. Eriksson comparing Rooney to Pele at this point in time is utterly laughable.

Re: Rooney
yeah, a point i forgot. You think its exactly easy for me to be objective on rooney with the way you guys / the commentators / analysers go ott on him? Motson compared him to Pele as well.
Not did gerrard or cole get enough praise for great performances.

Re: Rooney
Gary Neville played very well too. Usually he ****s up every 15 games or so though.

Most of the players he's been in a team with (most notably the ones at Everton) have mentioned, when asked about Rooney, how unselfish he is. Obviously they know less about football than you, though.
Did I mention how he played against Croatia? Specifically Paul Scholes's goal? And his constant pinging of balls into the box for Owen, Lampard et al? I'm pretty sure I did

Re: Rooney
Forget Rooney, let's talk about Gerrard.
I haven't really paid much attention to him up til now but I noticed him in last night's game.
Noticed him fking up every ball that came his way that is. Whenever he touched the ball England seemed to lose posession within a couple of seconds.
I'd be surprised if we don't have at least one better midfielder than him.
