There's not all that much drama on SA, but Breaking of Convention is very harshly viewed by the regulars.

Ok, so you go into my local. It's the first time you've been in there and you don't follow the 'rules' (known in house only) to the exact measure.
I take you outside and smash your head against a wall.
Is this acceptable?
No.

'General Conduct' it says. The first thing under that is (and I quote verbatim)
LURK BEFORE POSTING.
Yep, that was bold block caps.

This is true. Although GD is quite hostile at times, everyone knows how to take it.
The SA forums are full of people who were bullied as kids and have issues with asserting themselves in the real world so take the Interweb as being the best outlash.
It's quite sad to be honest. Apparently Phang and Quasi are in that group

That would be true if every thread was a 'newbie thread' (as it were).
Unfortunately for your argument, they're not.

SA is where the big boys* play.
*people weighing in excess of 25 stone, single, unlikely to reproduce, spent their lives working in IT, and with the charisma and social mannerisms of a phlegm spewing 3yr old.

Why? It ensures a happy, healthy board.
With lots of 'Lurk more' macros, sometimes involving the Starcraft Lurker.

Seriously, lurk a bit more for the first weeks, it helps. Not that I pretend to be a great poster, actually I am pretty dense but I like the way they regulate the style of their forums.

Not in my experience. Outside of posting areas which require some sort of technical know how (i.e. binary usenet groups or a torrent section on a forum or similar) blatant hostility to "newbies" just seems to satisfy the internet-ego of complete retards (see elemts of this board or AD, "back in the day"). I still cringe when here on GD people pounce on newbies with random flames (unless said newbie is actually a crapflooder or commercial advertiser).

That's working from incomplete information. Quite a few people (as in 'a disproportionate amount') post before lurking and don't get flamed, because they're not posting shit.

In general it doesn't really work like that over there, it's simple, they don't want their boards getting fagged up by the 'hay guys I am new over here' (or similar stuff) posts which is their good right. Just don't, you'll get it after a couple of weeks of lurking. Yes, when you still post a message like that, you'll get bashed, but that's mainly because it is clearly stated in their faqs or however you call them what you can do and what you can't. If you don't like it, there are some more forums out their on the internet that maybe fits you better.

What exactly was that shit about Skiddy's thread?
The other gimmicky one that someone linked to (with the oversized sig image and such) is obviously different.

I think my point was not that they shouldn't have the rule (it's their board, they can do what they want) but rather I couldn't see the need for the rule. Obviously it's only of passing interest to me as I'm not a member, but I'm curious as to how other internet communities etc are managed.

OK but it's contained within the document calle forum rules, and SilverSmoke said : "it is clearly stated in their faqs or however you call them what you can do and what you can't." which implies a rule, not advice.

He's talking about the immensely huge list of clauses and so forth which comprises the complete SA rules, not 'lurk more'. Lurking is the advice so you don't have to learn what is or what isn't allowed (mainly due to the forum's history; see Toxx Clause, etc) by reading the rules, but learning by association.

Re: The SA "P-P-P-Powerbook" counter-scam
OK well the rule I'm implicitly referring to is whatever the hell the people in that thread were objecting to.
Either Skiddy's thread was against the rules in some sense in which case they had odd rules or it wasn't in which case some of the people who replied behaved like pricks. I'm sure Starbucks or Phang will post here something like "DON'T POST SHIT THEN LOLLERZ" or similar, but I'm still not quite getting it.
edit : Obviously there might be some perfectly good rule that's being violated; this might be the wrong forum for such requests, or he should have put some sort of tag on the thread or similar, but there's still little need for such idiocy in response.

Lurking more would have prevented him writing a thread like that, or at least made him write about such a subject from a different angle.

Re: The SA "P-P-P-Powerbook" counter-scam
if skiddy had been around longer he would have got a similar response. people should lurk because they get an idea about what threads will get shot down. skiddy wouldnt have posted that thread if he'd lurked because he'd realise it would be seen as shit and subsequently would be flamed. if he had posted it anyway, he'd be flamed because it was, as threads go, total and utter shit.

Also flaming people for making bad threads is kind of Sunday-esque (well, within reason).
