I'm going to get it, though I doubt it will be as interesting as Medieval. What does it view as the end of the Roman period? Technically the Roman Empire wasn't destroyed until AD 1453.

its better than medieval - far more complex and much more to do. Plus the unit animation is fantastic

Will it run pleasantly on my p3 800, gforce4ti4200 and a 896mb ram? I am in need of a decent strategy game lately.

Re: Rome: Total War

I agree. I am a huge fan of Total War series. I pre-ordered it from Amazon.co.uk in early August. I have modded the demo to the point of no return. When I first played the demo I needed an oxygen tank on standby.
If you enjoy the first two you will love this one. Some people who play titles such as Command and Conquer and Cossacks don’t like this sort of game, as you cannot interact with the individual unit. This game is more about moving formations of units around and organising them.
Comparing this with a title such as Cossacks: Napoleonic Wars the engine to R:TW is a lot more pleasing and detailed.
A must for any strategy gaming fan!

Re: Rome: Total War

I've realised I've only liked RTS's with interesting storylines, does this one have it?

I hated AoE etc cause it was just so dull.

However I've loved C&C, WC, SC/BW, Dune etc cause they all have this ongoing plot thing...

Re: Rome: Total War

having played both demos i vastly prefer DoW to R:TW, but i'm not a great fan of the total war series so my judgement may be less useful for someone who is.

Which side of the game has been made complex, the strategic map or the battles? In my opinion it's the former which needed improvement in Medieval.

sure, the graphics are somewhat better and the campaign map got improved slightly, but thats about it.
as far as i can see youcan only play the romans(4 fractions that is) now, in the middle age version you could play all of them.
i also dont exactly like those senat missions, they want me to start wars with everyone around at the same time.

nah

you earn other nations when you defeat them.

i have gaul ,carthage, and greeks so far.

the senate - generally- tells you to attack your traditional enemies, but they are a pain in the ass.

i look forward to eliminating them this weekend.

you can ignore the senate just fine, as far as im aware. never tried it myself, but it should work.

non-roman factions dont have a senate,

thankfully.

Re: Rome: Total War

I've never been so disappointed with a game as this one.

The battles are fun, but the unit speed is way too high. I still prefer the battles here to Medieval though.

The strategic elements has been totally ruined. Firstmost because the changes make the strategy alot more like Heroes Of Might and Magic (create a superarmies, run around ravaging) as opposed to anything remotely like warfare. Secondmost because of the annoying graphics. The strategic map is filled with terrain, which makes borders, roads etc way too difficult to spot a. For some reason, the mouse actually lags on the strategic map (and according to the forums, I'm certainly not the only one experiencing this), but i'm having no trouble on the tactics map. The reports buttons drops on the right instead of just appearing there, making me wait two friggin seconds for the animation to complete *each* turn. The general interface just seems worse than Medivial too.

All in all they forgot to include the 'remove annoying shit' preference. I can't imagine anyone actually beta-tested this crap, all the eye-candy is there, but thats all there is. As far as I'm concerned, this is as shallow as games get. And I gave it far too many tries, as I really wanted to convince myself it was great.

Wait with playing this game 'till they patch it / expansion pack it up to a not so incredibly annoying level.

It's a bitch when your original leader dies leaving idiot sons to take over. Bah!

Plus it's full of pedos! I had one guy in the family tree that wasn't producing kids so I went and looked at the family tree and it turns out the fking 40 year old is married to a 7 year old kid.

Same thing with one 34 year old guy, married to a 10 year old. Oh those crazy romans!

I have watched my flatmate play it (still waiting for my computer to arrive), and it looks as though it gets a little tedious, tbh.

Re: Rome: Total War

It only gets tedious if you let it. You can do some quite nice tactical things both on the battlefield and on the campaign map. Lay nice traps where you lure out an army to relieve a settlement then abmush them on the way there. Little things like that help.

At least it was realistic in that regard.

Re: Rome: Total War

I got the game today. I have been playing it for roughly 6 hours and it’s fantastic. You get a nice big map of Europe in the box!
To be honest, I had this grand master plan that I would be the Britons straight away. But you have to do this tutorial thing, which does help. Then you only get the choice of 3 factions, I am going off the theory that if I do a short game (by capturing 15 provinces) I can get away with getting some more factions. Correct?
So far the game is great. It was worth the wait!

Re: Rome: Total War

It arrived today for me today too. So far I've been a bit disappointed though. I don't like what they've done with either the tactical or the strategic map. Also, the movies won't run properly on my brand new laptop (3ghz, 512mb ram). By the way, is the land on the strategic map supposed to be so ****ing dark, because on the box the land looks like what normal terrain should look like, but on my 'Prologue' mission evrything was completely black and flat-looking and on the first part of the imperial campaign you can make out a little detail but it's still really dark. I've tried messing with all of the graphics options, so it's not that.

Re: Rome: Total War

yes, they made some mistakes in the strategic map. you can hardly make out anything. for a start they could have made the different colors of the different factions more clear, they almost look like the normal background. then the borders and the streets look almost the same. i also dont like that whole exploring stuff, once you have been in a territory at least the borders of that territory should be visible. sometimes when you conquer an area you dont even see where it ends on the mainmap
but the rest of that the game is nice.

Re: Rome: Total War

Darn. I have been playing it on a 2.5GHZ, 512RAM, I don't have a clue what gfx card, but if the demo worked I knew the game would work. The only thing that does stutter if the FMV's, the Activision logo etc.
I get what you mean about the tactical map. I think it is more practical. I now find i can use ships a lot more than I did. Took 2 armies to Cathage and took it. Then a few turns later after taking the other provinces around it I knew practically it was never going to work. So left the cities and went back to Rome.
